VC-10 in RAF colours

#1 Post by ricardian » Thu Oct 14, 2021 7:13 pm

Ex-Ascot may find this to be of interest:
Special RAF tasks and equipment - from the VC10 website
During its 47 year career with the RAF, the VC10 was used for its main task, carrying people and cargo, and later on of course air-to-air refuelling, but also acquired some specialised tasks with associated equipment.

I have recently been reading about how an upgraded VC-10 version might have been a serious contender as a "Poffler", an Air Ministry coined term for an aircraft that patrolled, or "farmed", a segment of sky, on a continuous airborne alert, along the lines of the US Air Force's Strategic Command's Operation Chrome Dome, and a launch vehicle for the GAM-87 Skybolt missile until it was canned, and the Navy became the bearer of the UK's "strategic nuclear deterrent!" in the form of the Polaris missile.

Like UP (Scottish "gentleman" farmer), Ex-Ascot might have been a VC10 Poffler!

A lot of 'what ifs ' when looking at Vicker's products and proposals.

The two main British jet powered contenders to fulfill this mission were Avro and Vickers. The VC-10 was a long shot Ultimately the navy won out when it became clear that the Skybolt technology was not ready, and that the Polaris was a more accurate, strategically better and more potent weapon (probably for the best).

The Vulcan was a very impressive aircraft indeed!

Very interesting to see what a dirty jet burner the B52 was, as evidenced in that video Alison, as it flew away in a long flat arc of smoke.

I was privileged to see the Vulcan's very last display at Farnborough, and although the display was relatively sedate, out of respect for the old airframe, it was a still a spritely perfomance from a beautiful aircraft. Such a pity it is no longer flying.

Read somewhere recently, may have been here, that the B52's were being re-engined with RR donks. Apparently an order has been placed for an 'uuge number. Did you catch the Vulcan HOWL about 53 seconds in. Beautiful. When we had four go from QRA during a Mickey Finn the ground shook, and the sound would send shivers down your back. . :D

and a launch vehicle for the GAM-87 Skybolt missile
I had not appreciated that the French had also toyed with using the Dassault Mirage IV as a launch vehicle for the Skybolt missile.
In December 1963 Dassault proposed a Mirage IV-106 variant with 2 Snecma TF106 (license-built Pratt and Whitney) engines, an enlarged 105,000 gross-weight fuselage, terrain-avoidance radar, and armed with a proposed French version of the American Douglas GAM-87 Skybolt air-launched ballistic missile. This version would have been very costly, and ultimately was not ordered.

That VC10 site that ricardian references is fascinating.

The VC10 Sniffer Role
Around the time of the UK's first nuclear bomb tests, Operation Grapple in March 1957, Canberras had been modified to act as sniffers, so that they could take samples of the bomb's mushroom cloud. The evolution of the Cold War meant that a capability to collect high altitude air samples for detection of nuclear material continued to be useful. The Vulcan B.2MRR version as operated by no.27 squadron, originally modified for Maritime Reconnaisance, was the next type to be tasked with this and could carry two sampling pods below its delta wing. Between 1973 and 1982 these Vulcans, re-designated as SR2s, carried out the sampling task.

After no.27 squadron stood down, the next type to be sent out to collect air samples was the VC10. At least two of the K3s were modified so that they could be sent out on this air monitoring role. Officially the role is called Meteorological and Atmospheric Research but the main job is collecting dust samples and monitoring and recording of airborne radiation. When needed, the K3 tanker is modified so that it carries two sampling pods on its wing stations instead of the refuelling pods, and a smaller instrument underneath the nose of the aircraft. Inside, an operator's station is provided on the left side of the cabin, on the rear face of the toilet cubicle.

From information released to the press we know that ZA150 was sent to Kadena Air Base, Japan, in October 2006. In May 2009 a K3 was again sent to Japan to collect information on North Korea's next nuclear test. The purpose of these flights is to gain information on the composition and yield of the weapon used, but information about the distribution of any fallout is also useful and this ties in to the meteorological aspect of the role.
As recently as 2006! I wonder what aircraft is used for this kind of task today?

<<Edited to say>>
The VC10 and Lockheed TriStar tanker/transports were replaced in RAF service by the Airbus A330 MRTT Voyager under the Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft Project. The type's final flights in RAF service took place on 20 September 2013, the final refuelling sortie was followed by a tour of the UK. On 24 September, ZA150 made its last flight to Dunsfold Aerodrome for preservation at the Brooklands Museum, while ZA147 arrived at Bruntingthorpe on 25 September.>> From Wikipedia

One for Ex-Ascot!
