From Oct 1959 to Apr 1961 I was a 16 yr old Boy Entrant at RAF Cosford training to be a Telegraphist (being taught Morse receiving/sending and touch-typing using a teleprinter to send/receive messages). At any one time there were about 2,000 boys aged between 15 and 17.5 on site undergoing training. Amongst those in charge of discipline were several ex-WW2 aircrew such as Flight Sergeant Colin "Chiefy" Hynd, a flight engineer, who died a few weeks ago at the age of 96, his funeral is in Dunfermline on Fri 7 Oct. He was one of the discip SNCOs who turned boys like me into (more or less) responsible young men and a lot of us managed to get in touch with him after many years, sending cards for his birthday and for Xmas. He also attended many of the Boy Entrant's reunions. Here's a recording of an interview with Colin about 5 years ago (from "International Bomber Command Centre Digital Archive").
