Hi Sveepz, welcome back.

Welcome back Sveepz

Re: Sveepz
Hi to all and sundry,
I was looking for a thread of 're-introductions' for the 'long-time-no-see' - and the first sentence of this one seems to summarise my message
. I'm neither AME, A&P nor PPL unfortunately - just older and (hopefully) wiser.
Been terribly busy (uhhh, it's always hard to say no to jobs you really like?), lost my password (tnx for recovery-help!), but as has been discovered before - it's impossible to totally stay away from the community here.
Oh, and youknowwhat - I've terribly missed several of you!

Re: Sveepz
Yep welcome back
Re: Sveepz
Thank you! [smiling broadly]
Well, what happened to me? Life did, I guess
.
Had some 'challenging' translations (that's the original of the last one, https://www.theguardian.com/books/2017/ ... gaia-vince ) - to remind us even in the times of extinction there are winners, too; also if we want to turn back time for a species, who is to say what's the 'baseline' - super interesting and super full of names of species. Some had to be invented for our text
- well, didn't do that myself.
Then, taught English to some kids (ok, teenagers) from Ukraine, from around Herson, to help them manage better at school here. Real challenge for me, as I haven't taught kids 'into' Latin alphabet, which they were not fully comfortable with, and the UKR alphabet is different from the RUZ one. So is the language, especially pronunciation (which is why they understand RUZ and russians don't understand them). As they were from the mainly russian-speaking region, they said 'we don't learn russian, we just speak it', even though they communicated in Ukrainian.
Plus, my russian is so-so, but UKR-ENG google translate helped a lot!
One of the guys wants to become a fighter pilot, btw - found some motivating videos of cockpits etc. explained - greatest thanks to you guys for the background over the years for me to know where to start from.
And had an extra interesting experience of touching the ice in my own yard with the back of my head - quite a bang, actually
- which resulted in inability of working with screens for more than a month after being unable to read anything at all for a couple of weeks, as it just made me sick. Very annoying. Because, it appears it's no fun taking naps if you can't read in between them! Plus, when it was somewhat possible to start typing again, it was much slower than I'm used to and I made typos, which hadn't happened for years, and was extremely annoying
.
BUT, mind you, I think I didn't knock any screws loose permanently!

Probes:
Glad to hear that you are (mostly?) OK.
Teaching is a noble and rewarding venture.
Props as well for helping out these kids. Language differences aside, the trauma of what is going on in their homeland has to weigh on them as well.
Book added to my voluminous "To read" list. It's available at my local library.
Keep us updated.

Re: Sveepz
Thank you!
The book did change the way I perceive the natural world around me - even though I've always been more down-the-Earth than average, I think. And I really loved the concluding sentence of the chapter on some species being very successful: "If we think they are weeds, that's our problem."

Re: Sveepz
Wonderful to have you back Probes. Us ladies are very thin on the ground here. We need all the help we can get!
Welcome back to you too Sveepz

Welcome back to you too Sveepz

Re: Sveepz
Who needs thick ladies?, although I believe the term is used to signify those of generous proportions.

thick ladies

Re: Sveepz
Belated welcome back to both. It is good to hear of 'returners' rather than 'leavers', we have had too many of the latter.
