Securing ppruned.org's future

#1 Post by admin » Wed Sep 16, 2015 7:30 am

Since kicking off ppruned.org three and half weeks ago we have gone from strength to strength. Now with 140 members and close to 8000 postings it has been an unmitigated disaster success. Thank you all.

I have had some concerns with regard to what happens if I get run over by a bus. To this extent I haven't been outside for the whole three weeks, buses are quite scarce in my lounge room. But you can only live off take-away pizza for so long. So today I signed up for a years commercial hosting. Only 25 quid for the year so not expensive.

This decision was also brought about by demands by my rellies that come October I visit them in Sydney. At 1000km it's not somewhere I could dash back from quickly should anything undue occur, like a blown fuse or similar.

Whilst I can migrate the site with three or four hours work, there is a thing called propagation delay of 24 to 48 hours for the worldwide indices - indexes (DNS servers) that tell your computers the sites address. So the plan is to use one of the domain names - www.pproone.org for the site on my server and the other - www.ppruned.org for the new site until I am happy to switch over.

www.ppruned.org will be thoroughly tested with a dated set of topics and threads, and then when it's ready to go live it will be updated with the then current data and the switch over will occur.

So everyone needs to be aware that until I make an announcement www.pproone.org is the live site and www.ppruned.org is the test site on the new server.

By moving the site to a commercial server should anything untoward happen to me, then ppruned.org will continue into the next century. The plan is to give a set of keys to someone (passwords).

Alison
PS. Given that so many of us are getting a bit old and spindly it's not unreasonable to consider ourselves to having been ppruned - cut orf. Hence the new site name ppruned.org. =))

Absolutely brilliant Alison. Thank you. Just look out for those buses on your travels.

Thanks a lot for all the initial hard work which I have no doubt will be needed for the transfer to the new arrangements. By the way I hope you did get a good deal on the pizzas.

Now listen here, not all of us have been ppruned, not yet anyway :D

It's a great name and as everyone has said, thanks for the hard work you have put in
and to take someone else's words, making it a community.

Many thanks indeed Alison.

Do you want us to give pprooned.org some exercise to help confirm that it's working as expected? Basically test postings that we know will be thrown away when the commercially-hosted site goes live. (And nothing remotely controversial so you don't have to worry about keeping half an eye on the children in two different places.)

Alison,

For meritorious service in providing "We the Pruned" a place in which we can espouse the virtues of life in general, along with all its hardships and huggie-fluffs, I hereby bestow upon you this title of "Honorary Army Ranger." Sua Sponte Alison! :D

Please add my thanks to the pile. I missed the internet conversations with many of the folks here. Even more, seeing the intellect that is possessed by so many.

Happy to contribute with ugly money. It shouldn't all be on you.

- seconded, not only the 25 Squid a year, but domain costs as well as inevitable 'other' costs, looking probably at the £50+ mark depending on the number of domains. Costs will rise as the server will (hopefully!) need upgrading with increased usage.

With 142 aboard - and rising (assisted, no doubt, by '"LloydLoon") - my initial thought was a yearly £0.50 standing order into an account? I would far prefer that to any dreaded 'advertising', and perhaps it could be changed to a one-off £1 'registration' fee later?

What say the great unwashed (and Alison, of course,,,)?

BOAC no problem with us. And, less of the 'unwashed' had a shower yesterday.

Perhaps the donations should be based on star ratings! That will slow a few people down.
