Strong winds in Kirkwall.
I thought I had posted before but it has not appeared so I will post a condensed version.
I recall being told, in the 80s, that the strongest wind speed ever recorded in Kirkwall was 116kts or there abouts.
I have had some quite interesting departures from there in the 748 in strong winds.
For those who know the 748, 22 flap water meth on gets one away from the runway in the shortest distance available.
Helps to avoid downwind, off runway, excursions in max crosswind take offs!!
Have experienced 70kt fog at Sumburgh.
Learnt a lot on my first command,.
Glorious times.
-22 earlier today but my meter says -18 at the moment, should be +a bit over the weekend but that will mean swimming pool weather, until it refreezes when we will have an ice rink on the drive.
Orkney 1953. Sustained wind – not a gust – of 125mph
We moved here in April 2004 and in January 2005 we experienced our first but not our last Force 12. You could feel the whole house, built in 1914, vibrating and the wind was booming!

Camels ejected from beauty contest over Botox use and other 'tampering'
Mohammed Tawfeeq and Jack Guy, CNN • Published 9th December 2021

https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/came ... index.html

Breeders receive cash prizes if their camel wins an award.
(CNN) — Organizers of a popular camel beauty contest in Saudi Arabia have disqualified 43 contestants after cracking down on Botox injections and other forms of "tampering" by breeders.
The 40-day King Abdulaziz Camel Festival, located about 100 kilometers (62 miles) northeast of the capital, Riyadh, launched at the beginning of December. In its sixth year, it sees breeders compete for more than $66 million in prize money, according to Saudi state media outlet Saudi Press Agency (SPA), so the stakes are high.
Unscrupulous breeders have been accused of using a number of methods to make their camels more likely to win, such as injecting silicone and fillers, and inflating body parts using rubber bands to enhance their appearance, reports SPA.
This year, organizers have dealt with 147 cases of tampering -- the largest number since the festival began. Forty-three contestants were disqualified.

Marzouk Al-Natto, spokesman for the festival's legal committee, said that breeders found to be tampering have to pay fines which vary according to the offense, reports SPA.
For example, the fine for injecting fillers, Botox or hormones can be as much as 100,000 riyals ($27,000) per camel, while braiding, cutting the tail or dying the camel incurs a fine of 30,000 riyals ($8,000).
In order to detect tampering, the camels are examined both physically and clinically, using devices such as X-ray machines and sonar devices.

The owners of winning camels receive cash prizes, and the recognition means they can sell the animals for higher prices.
Rare camels are big business in Saudi Arabia. An estimated 1.5 million of the animals are protected by their owners using microchips, according to SPA.
Camels are an important part of Saudi culture. The animals are well-adapted to life in deserts such as the Arabian Desert, large parts of which lie within the kingdom of Saudi Arab.

I wonder if this happens with human beauty contests. :-? :-?? :ymdevil:

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... not forgetting the biblical injunction... "It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God."

Personally I am with Forrest Gump on this matter... "beauty is the eye of the President on my buttocks!"... =))

Funnily enough, I met less racism in the army than anywhere else in SA society...

The thing about camels is you have to be quick or you'll get an ugly one.

Apparently.
Had never before entered a premises where they were available, that I know of.
I parted a [metaphorical] bead curtain to find these :)

Morning, all. Both rain and toothache back this morning. Off to the foundry so Madame can review the waxes of her two latest works before casting in bronze. Might even be done in the next weeks while we are in London.

Morning folks. A pretty miserable day but hopefully it will result in rain. Will still have to water though in case it doesn't. No show with housekeeper today. At hospital with her thieving little daughter giving birth to her second child.

Water methanol, a wonderful invention. HRH PC managed to drive us into a very soft area on a grass apron area in Tanzania. We dug it out as best as we could but even full power wouldn't get us out. Switched on the water methanol and we almost got airborne on the apron. He asked me at a reception that evening if we had managed to get it out. 'Luckily yes Sir'. Driving to the airstrip the following day I noticed some new saplings had been planted along the road. I pulled one out and gave it to the ADC. I said he made the hole ask him to plant this in it. Which he did, The locals thought it most odd that a future King was planting a tree. We taxied out and he blew it down. That made the Peterborough column in The Telegraph. Don't know how he found out about it.

Brilliant story EX-A made me smile.

It confirms my belief that the 748 is fairly indestructable, I have, unintentionaly, tried to do it from time to time!!

A tribute to British engineering.

Thanks for that Ricardian.

I know what you mean about the house rocking, I lived, while on the 748, to the north of Aberdeen (Ythanbank) in a 1890 converted school with 18" granite walls.

Some nights I wondered if we would wake and the house would no longer be around the bed.

The terminal is quite small with no airbridge in Ivalo (Kittilä also) and requires a walk of several metres across the tarmac.

I wonder how these passengers cope, not many would have the sort of clothes required for -30 c.
I've been into Kittila Talmacapt.! At this time of the year (here) we are usually well north of 30+, so Kittila & Levi was just lovely.

We've winter gear to see us right just about everywhere...but up in the arctic circle,...well we've hired the required gear then...

Morning all.

Just returned from first sortie of the day, which involved refueling, traveling to The Post Shop to send UK Christmas cards on their way and a stop at the woodyard on the way back to collect a full barrel of gas in exchange (+€21) for an empty--+
.
Round trip 1 hour 15 minutes.

Later to the hairdressers. Mrs IB is at the footman today, for a pedicure.
