Massive power failure. Area ? Network ? Train halted miles from anywhere for two hours. Power went off no lights, no a/c and no internet. Increasingly depressing announcements but suddenly moving again and arrived at brand new station of Nîmes Pont du Gard. Now almost home. Fingers crossed.

Wolves.
Not the football team.
More wolves than usual have been sighted in Finland this year and this morning one was videod, at 0700, in the car park of the McDonalds in the local town, about 6km, as the crow flies, from here.
Some animals have no taste!!
Maybe we shall see it in our garden.
There are more deer than usual this year, perhaps there is a link.
The number of small song birds seems to have decreased but there were more woodpeckers about last year.
Nature balancing itself?

Back to having a pub lunch near LHR, we're going to try The Queen's Head at Cranford. Wish us luck!

Cut the grass this evening, first time this year.
The tulips and daffodils are in bloom and it is the second half of May.

*decides not to wear little gingham pinny and go into the woods today*
Good morning on Whitsunday, the Feast of Pentecost.
Dark, dull, overcast, probably drizzling, misty, 4°C expecting 6°C.
Glad about the rain anyway.
Most of the deciduous trees are bare now, still some oaks and beeches holding on to their leaves.
Little bright-yellow chrysanthemums flowering in the garden, brightening up the gloom.
"And to think that it's the same dear old Moon..."

Bricking up basement windows is HARD!
The stuff for 3 windows weighs a sixth of a ton, you're on your knees or your belly most of the time, and the previous job was a complete horlicks and needed a big clean out.
Total pig getting the last brick in, and it was only on reviewing the video done by a professional that I spotted the trick - having an assistant on the inside.
I didn't spot that on first viewing because it's dark in the basement. And I have no assistant.

Whereas in the UK most trees are in leaf, not necessarily full leaf yet.
Laburnums almost over.

I recently sold my terraced house to a developer and the first thing he did was remove a thousand housebricks. "Where did they come from?" I asked?Fox3WheresMyBanana wrote: ↑Sat May 18, 2024 7:31 pmBricking up basement windows is HARD!

Chimney breast - seems you don't need chimneys in a house these days.

You do in mine!
I have a woodstove which provides the heat in winter.
However, as I improve the insulation and draughtproofing, I'm finding the woodstove is too warm at the beginning and end of the heating season, so I will be installing a heat pump, probably next week.

Good morning all, clear blue sky here today, magpie singing outside the window. (Demanding morning tea.) Currently 13C, forecast max 17C. Gordonia & banksia are flowering, allowing bees to do a final stock-up for winter. Must feed Maggles.
Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread VI
I feed the birds with seed (and, sometimes, peanuts), however there are some who say that the birds should be left to find their own natural food-sources.
Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread VI
We only give a small amount of food, so they don't become dependent. The magpies particularly prefer to find their natural food, and when it's plentiful, eg after rain, they will forage in the yard rather than visit us. It's more important for birds to have access to clean water, and that if they are fed, they get healthy food.

Dog show today, took Faraday and Cassini, with two of Faraday's puppies, Lucy and Artemis, also entered. Faraday shows as a veteran now, when the entry class is available (dogs 7 years and older), and the tradition is that when they run round the ring, everyone applauds them. She picked up Select, which was worth two points. Lucy surprised me by beating Artemis for WB and so picked up a point, and Cassini behaved well enough to beat her to Best of Winners, ensuring he also got a point.
Faraday did a couple of FastCAT runs too, and then had her first attempt at Rally (dog rally, not driving cars...) which she flunked spectacularly. Then Cassini had a go, and did well enough to pass for his third qualification, and so will be sporting a Rally Novice title when AKC sort the paperwork. They both need more practice on grass, Faraday was way more interested in sniffing around that paying attention to me, and because it was competition, I couldn't attract her attention with treats. If I have treats she's very attentive and does what I tell her.

I admit that feeding birds is 'entertainment' for the dozen people that I live with (in sheltered accommodation).
In addition to the usual sparrows, tits and starlings (greedy beggars), we have had nuthatches (for the peanuts) - and grey squirrels (for both seeds and nuts).
Excess human food (bread, sandwiches and meat fillings are also eagerly sought after).

While we were fast asleep......Our niece Lucie, 43, during the night completed a midnight run up Mt Snowdon to raise money for her still-born baby charity. Five hrs thirteen there and back. A beautiful night and amazing pictures from the top.

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread VI
I feed the birds with a quota each day - normally mealworms and suet pellets. I see it as additional to whatever else they can find. Interestingly, even the crows and magpies now come to the table, which they didn't previously. I agree re the starlings. There are about 30 around here, and they are very messy eaters, but the blackbirds are happy to eat whatever falls on the groundG-CPTN wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2024 1:32 amI admit that feeding birds is 'entertainment' for the dozen people that I live with (in sheltered accommodation).

OFSO, have you been setting fire to buses in Twickenham again?
The BBC are reporting that a 490 caught fire in Richmond road yesterday afternoon.

Afternoon folks. Sunny. We just give food scraps to the birdies. All vegetarian so they eat the lot. The hornbills are very amusing with spaghetti. They throw the strands into the air and catch them on the way down

We had to look that route up, Talma, we are normally on the 281. I thought I might see one of the famous new Paris electric buses on fire yesterday but no luck.
