Sitting here waiting for new TV to be delivered. Gate open, security bars open, window blinds up. And it's a tranquil day, no noise anywhere. Phone beeps, "your parcel has been delivered". WHAT ? Hit localiser "it's on your terrace". Actually under the car port. Utterly silent delivery.

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
Good morning, blue dome skies as far as I can see, calm, smoke from a chimney is in a horizontal layer about thirty feet up*; my thermometer has been down to -0.7°C but beginning to rise. Frost on house roofs, lawn, etc.
I may have mentioned this before but I'm sure when I was at school it was "rooves" but that seems out of favour these days.
*edit to add: to be clear, this was the smoke from one chimney, not a sheet of inversion-layer over the whole suburb.

Good morning all, grey day with a bit of rain this morning. Currently 12C, forecast max 18C.
Indeed, rooves is the plural of roof, staves the plural of staff (as in surveyor's staff or part of a barrel). It's slightly irksome when people talk of multiple "roofs" or a single "stave".I may have mentioned this before but I'm sure when I was at school it was "rooves" but that seems out of favour these days.

I've only ever heard and used roofs, and I've had to deal with Grammar Nazis from Himmler's inner circle!

Me too, but there's probably been a bit of drift there over time.I'm sure when I was at school it was "rooves" but that seems out of favour these days.
Another example: when I was doing clever stuff back in the day, I remember registering patents (as in 'pay-tents') but everyone seems to speak of 'pattents' now. Doesn't matter to me - never got any royalties - but, just an oddity, I suppose.

Curious: one has only ever heard of "pay-tent" leather, for example.jimtherev wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2024 11:06 pmMe too, but there's probably been a bit of drift there over time.I'm sure when I was at school it was "rooves" but that seems out of favour these days.

I've heard both 'pay-tent' and 'pat-tent' used in reference the documents asserting ownership of intellectual property, but only ever 'pay-tent' in reference to really shiny leather.Karearea wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2024 11:39 pmCurious: one has only ever heard of "pay-tent" leather, for example.jimtherev wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2024 11:06 pmMe too, but there's probably been a bit of drift there over time.I'm sure when I was at school it was "rooves" but that seems out of favour these days.

Mrs OFSO has bought some strange pot plants for our terrace. Big menacing things. Can't see a stinger (yet) but I think they are triffids. I shall avoid watching the next meteor shower....
Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
As I used to think of my MiL..."Say it with flowers, give her a triffid."

G’day
19°c, The soothsayer is going for 23°c.
The full overcast is burning off Dome soon.
Heading for a week in the low 20s
Provisions and mail to do.
Cleaner has gone sick, you would think the world has ended.
Hope the Op goes well *Hydro*

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
French air traffic controllers have been granted the right to turn up to work three hours late and leave three hours early.
Under a new agreement between the National Union of Air Traffic Controllers, reported by French media, the country's government made a practice called "clearances" a legal right for controllers.
Clearances, where air traffic staff leave work during quiet periods, are believed to be a common practice in France.
"Believed to be "? Bah, humbug

Good morning, 3°C and was raining earlier, rain with a Significant Look about it.
Clearly there has been some misunderstanding, I want to go for my walk in a couple of hours, I'm not walking in that.
Today is Ascension Day.

OFSO Regarding my previous PM to you and advice in planning my trip to France from England, this could definitely swing my choice to taking the train

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
Spent the day in Helston, Cornwall today as it is Flora Day when folk dance through the streets gents dressed in top hats and tails and ladies in long dresses following a brass band playing the famous tune. This will be familiar to some of our fraternity who spent time at Culdrose. I had not attended for over 50 years so it was a trip down memory lane especially as it was 54 years to the day when I proposed to her who would become Mrs S.
