Woody & TGG, is this the usual time of year for bush fires in that neck of the woods? It would be unusual, though not unknown, here, but the fire season is starting earlier it seems.

Anyway, hope they are sorted quicky and minimum damage, and all are safe.
Hydromet, the Cape Peninsular and environs is a winter rainfall region, and thus 20 to 30 years ago we would not have expected such warm, dry conditions at this time of the year that are so conducive to bad forest fires but, as I discovered when I was over last month, the interior of the province has become hotter and the onset of the low pressure cold frontal areas from the far southern latitudes pulls very warm air off the high plateau and compresses the air flowing down to the coastal plain resulting in very warm berg wind conditions, even this far into the winter season. The only glimmer of hope is that once the front arrives the wind will wrap round from the northwest and heavy rain is likely. vide. today's forecast from the Cape Town area:

Rain on the way.

That just shows up as a big blank area on my browser, not even a YouTube-sized rectangle.

Ughhhh...No clue, I can see it here

If you can go to vimeo.com and search for "Cloquet Helibase 2015 Season" See if that works, otherwise I am out of ideas unless I can get it as a shared file on google

OK, I can see them both now. I think I had NoScript settings that were blocking stuff. My browser is as well-protected as I can make it.

Ah hah, we now have the power, on both channels and it appears to be AC/DC! :-bd

Both gnomes, playing air guitar, and headbanging, in the mosh pit up front!

Canned Heat! How apt!

Divided well fall,
Come on now people lets get on the ball,
And work together,
Come on, come on lets work together,
Now, now people,
Say now together we will stand,

While back in SA 3 weeks ago I drove up to UCT to see the damage caused by the Devil's Peak fire which destroyed the Jagger library, and jumped the double lane highway and raced through the Rose Garden destroying the historic windmill. Apparently it had spread and jumped the peak and was burning down the other side of the mountain towards the heavily populated area of University Estate and the old District 6 area. It was only a change of wind that spared the city from a total disaster in that area.
Happy to read that the windmill is well on its way to restoration. :-bd

Mostert Mill.JPG

A lot of sentiment around Mostert's Mill for me as I have an old Kodak 8 millimeter cine film of my very young mum standing next to the mill back in the 60's. Sadly she's no longer around so at least the windmill will stand again.

2050 has come about in France in 2022.

by TheGreenGoblin
A weather forecaster who warned of high temperatures across France in 2050 due to the climate crisis has seen her predictions come true in 2022.

French weather presenter, Évelyne Dhéliat, predicted in 2014 that temperatures would reach up to 43C in August due to global warning.

However, the country is set to see happen this weekend, 28 years earlier than predicted and in the typically cooler month of June.

France is experiencing a profound heatwave and has just observed it’s earliest recording of 40C weather in history, with cities such as Nantes and Tours set to reach highs of 43C on Saturday.

In Paris, Saturday could become the hottest June day yet with forecasters predicting highs between 38 and 39C, which would break the French capital’s previous June heat record set in 1947.

Here try this:

Brilliant vid, G-man. I particularly liked the bit where a Bambibucket load was accurately dumped on an individual smouldering tree. As precise as a surgeon with a scalpel. Nice!

Other than perhaps carrier deck ops in rough weather, I can't think of anything more dramatic than airborne firefighting.

This one was made by one of my managers...it is pretty good too, you get to see some more of my fancy bucket work and the helitorch in operation, along with daily activity at a large fire base near the end....:

Can't see that one, G-MAN.

You need to do whatever you did with the other one.
