Just being a stickler for grammar, rgb. Without further qualification, sadly attaches to the subject of the participle. Most of us will be sad to depart this life, but no doubt unable to express it.

I knew that my sentence was not grammatically correct!

That is sad. Always liked his posts here and over there and our small bits of back and forth, always amiable. I hate losing people. A good guy most certainly.

I think that's a fine idea, including the avatar.
In aircraft maintenance an item that has reached its timed life is tagged as Time Expired (T/X) before it is sent for overhaul. A discreet T/X below the black ribbon perhaps?

Alec absolutely despised Brussels sprouts. But he loved him a good ol' deep-fried Turkey for Thanksgiving.

Good idea, but perhaps only if they hadn't established an Avatar of their own, if so, probably more appropriate to keep theirs, with the T/X idea, or maybe just "Inop" - after all, for them it's no longer OpsNormal !!

How about "Gone West"? That is an old-fashioned term for someone having died that one sometimes sees applied to someone from the aviation fraternity. I like its suggestion that the deceased has literally passed on.

What about "Departed to the Higher Flight Levels.''

I'd say leave the avatars and posts exactly as is, with the addition of a small discrete chainsaw to the sig block to denote the members passing. Those who know will understand the significance.

Dushan gave me the news the other day while I was camping in deepest, darkest Kentucky where the Interweb has barely reached...

He was a good man that spent his life truly serving the common good.

Sad day... I raised a glass or two for him...

Thanks for the link Dushan. I attempted to sign the guest book but for some reason it would not go through.

The 'captcha' link just kept popping up. Gave up after about 5 tries.

Sent a card via snail mail instead.

He will certainly be missed.
