RGB:

Tell that to SWMBO...

In order to pass on the skills I wish to my kid I want to be out in spring, summer and fall... That is quite impossible if SWMBO is uncomfortable. This is the compromise.

Yes, I am well aware of the compromises necessary to create a semi-peaceful existence with SWMBO. :D

A Lutra:

I have to confess that my two destroyed discs, degenerating knee, two messed up ankles and one messed up foot actually can't find much complaint when it is 27f outdoors and I'm lying in that queen size with the furnace running...

The funny thing is 40 years ago I laughed at my father when he packed about 100lbs of canvas tent and another couple of hundred pounds of crap in the car to go camping on the grounds I could easily survive with a poncho and sleeping bag... Now one finds some wisdom in my, formerly misled, father's packing habits... ;) ;)

Not being whipped at all I choose when, how and where to go camping.

The army cured me of any urge for both camping and exercise so the when is never. The rest is moot.

Camping??...That's where to hotel has no valet parking right?

Talking of camping and la dolce vita, Britain's resident hard man (ex SAS etc.), survivalist and head of the British scouting movement (known for a camp or two) was accused of setting up in a local hotel during the filming of one of his interminable TV survival series here in the UK... I was apt to set aside my disdain for the guy when I heard of his skulduggery!

A former SAS soldier became embroiled in the television faking row yesterday after it was revealed that he stayed in hotels during a series about surviving unaided in the "hellholes of the world".

PS - I am sure that Con Pilot would have been very amused at this huge, but not unexpected thread drift... :)

I believe he passed TA initial selection. No idea about the rest of the phases or if he was taken on strength.

From: Wiki

Eventually, Grylls joined the Territorial Army and, after passing selection, served as a reservist with the 21 SAS Regiment (Artists Reserve) until 1997

More apt to listen to this bloke. Anybody who can keep a bit of flesh on his bones while genuinely staying out in the bush and imparting useful advice is OK by me.

Err...Gentlemen; Ex Commandos, Bush Scouts, Rangers, et al;

May someone who has been none of the above please draw your attention to the fact that this thread is not about camping or any ex Military stuff! [-X

Rather it is/was about a bloke who will be missed by all of us. :((

A gentle reminder.

Pinky is quite right, this thread should be about Alec, and only about him. I'm just as guilty for the thread drift as anyone else: mea culpa.

In the midst of all this, and I mean no disrespect here, was Clever and Cunning a TOP poster? Maybe he/she became a poster after the chief nincompoop there had expelled me, as I don't remember his/her posts?

I've known Alec for awhile and I had no idea he was 'clever and cunning' until I was told by someone else.

One more piece of sad news is that Con Pilot's widow, Suzi died last month.
I kept in touch with her after, Alec's death and knew that her condition was deteriorating, recently.
Because they stand on the wall and say "nothing's gonna hurt you tonight, not on my watch".
