The Barcelona football star, Lionel Messi, is on trial for alleged tax fraud in Spain. The Agencia Tributaria (tax office) lawyers are asking for a penalty of a custodial sentence of slightly less than three years for 'tax evasion'.

Note: custodial sentences in civil cases (as opposed to criminal cases) of three years and less do not have to be served in Spain.
