Song sung blue...

#1 Post by Cacophonix » Sat Jan 14, 2017 6:52 pm

I have always liked the lyrics to the music I listen to and even if they don't really have any meaning per se, they always have meaning for the person listening to the song and that is the huge power of the lyric as it can be shared and enjoyed by millions of people each enjoying it in a possibly unique way.

There are of course, song lyrics that do have a background story like the lyrics to the old rock classic Smoke on the Water telling as it does about Deep Purple being witness to the burning down of a casino on the shores of Lake Geneva

Smoke on the water

In the same way I had always wondered about the meaning to this very sad song sung by Lucinda Williams and then, today, I finally found the whole story and, boy, it does not get any sadder than this...

The story behind Lake Charles...

Wow! :(

Lake Charles

He had a reason to get back to Lake Charles
He used to talk about it
He'd just go on and on
He always said Louisiana
Was where he felt at home
He was born in Nacogdoches
That's in East Texas
Not far from the border
But he liked to tell everybody
He was from Lake Charles
Did an angel whisper in your ear
And hold you close and take away your fear
In those long last moments
We used to drive
Through Lafayette and Baton Rouge
In a yellow Camino
Listening to Howling Wolf
He liked to stop in Lake Charles
Cause that's the place that he loved
Did you run about as far as you could go
Down the Louisiana highway
Across Lake Pontchartrain
Now your soul is in Lake Charles
No matter what they say
Did an angel whisper in your ear
And hold you close and take away your fear
In those long last moments
We used to drive
Through Lafayette and Baton Rouge
In a yellow Camino
Listening to Howling Wolf
He liked to stop in Lake Charles
Cause that's the place that he loved
Did you run about as far as you could go
Down the Louisiana highway
Across Lake Pontchartrain
Now your soul is in Lake Charles
No matter what they say
Did an angel whisper in your ear
And hold you close and take away your fear
In those long last moments
He had a reason to get back to Lake Charles
He used to talk about it
He'd just go on and on
He always said Louisiana
Was where he felt at home
Did an angel whisper in your ear
And hold you close and take away your fear
In those long last moments
Did an angel whisper in your ear
And hold you close and take away your fear
In those long last moments
