No, because it's a very routine scam. I was thinking more of the mental frame of mind of the victim, not only falling for the scam, but against all odds, refusing to believe it's a scam. My friend will never discuss the scams he's been a victim of, because he doesn't want to face my reasoning that it is a scam. He won't tell me he's been approached by another scammer offering to recover his money because he knows what I will say... And somewhere in the depths of his brain I think he knows it's yet another scam and STILL goes along with it

Help me out here. What does Scamming have to do with Anglo Australians or vice verse? ;)))

Nothing at all, I think it's just a cross-post error, intended to be in the scammers thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=23

Over many months, I have noticed that telephone calls (to me) that fail to connect (ie just open line with no voice) inevitably are from scam callers (determined from analysis of 1471 callback). The latest purported to be from a caller selling insulation.

I do not have any sophisticated software on my telephone - so is it just serendipity that fails to connect their call?

They often use autodiallers, that dial hundreds of numbers quickly and only pass answered calls to the scammers (lots of calls go unanswered, so they don't want to waste the scammers time calling manually). If all the the scammers in a call centre happen to already have victims on the hook then these autodiallers will often just give an open line to anyone that picks up. There's a YouTube channel where a chap hacks into the CCTV in one of the scammer call centres, often maybe eight or ten scammers hard at work on the phones at any one time.

Wasn't it Capetonian who managed to convince a scammer that he was an ancient, computer-illiterate man who couldn't follow the instructions, and managed to get the scammer to download what he thought was a screen shot, but was actually a virus that locked up his computer.

I told him he was a very naughty man.

We are getting at least two, sometime three, every day at the moment, plus occasionally one that is connected. I must be getting very senile considering the number of times I'm allowlng unauthorised activity on my VISA card, that the caller is trying to help my with, but I refuse their request ! Landline, with no programme to record incoming numbers, tho' we have reported the problem to the local Telecom, who reckon that there is nothing we / they can do ?

It's quicker to silence the phone by picking it up and then putting it down again rather than wait for a long time before it to goes to answerphone - if it would ?

Thinks ... if we leave it unanswered does the "caller" reckon that we are out of town and then come and burgle the house ?

Speedy; Why don't you get yourself an Umpires whistle and give one of those scammer callers a blast?

It may not work, but an aquaintance of mine swears that the last time he did it he heard screams of agony before the call disconnected. :ymdevil:

If you are going to do that, make sure your voice 'fades' away so the caller has difficulty hearing you and hopefully presses the phone tight to his/her ear....

Don't get scammers here on the phone just wrong numbers. No apologies just ring off. Ignorant bastards.

If I make this mistake I always say sorry, wrong number, but it has been nice to talk to you.

I don't open 'em, but I bet it's something delightful.

Some script kiddie got an early Christmas present, getting a load of those emails telling me they've been watching porn on my system and have captured images on my webcam, pay up with Bitcoin or else etc.

I think my spam filter has bounced around a thousand of them so far, they arrive in groups of 4 to the same email address, then a few minutes later, another four.

Put a piece of tape over your webcam, just to be safe.
Been in data comm since we formed the bits individually with a Morse key.

I always cover the webcam when not in use. Or for that one, it's face down looking at the monitor stand, so not going to see anything.

Day before yesterday I got a text from my bank advising of possible fraudulent charges on my credit card. Only listed two charges, one that I had just made and another that I hadn't. :-o
Called the bank's fraud department, which was linked in the text, and was told about two other fraudulent charges that hadn't been included in the original text.
They immediately canceled my card and made arrangements to expedite a new one.
They would not give me too many details about the questionable charges except that one was from a home improvement store and another just a name, no location.
They said that the home improvement store's charge was allowed and then immediately reversed by the store and the other large charge attempt was detected as fraud and denied however another to the same place, for a much smaller amount, was allowed but reversed during my call.
I was advised to file a police report by the agent. I asked with what agency I should file with; FBI? as the agent let slip that one charge attempt was from another state, State attorney general's office?, as they handle fraud, or the local PD?
Sorry...we can't advise you about that. How about exact details of the attempted charges, relating to who tried them...you guessed it...can't tell you. Then how the Hell am I supposed to give anyone any useful information?
Went to the nearest PD precinct to file a report in person, as I know that the police non-emergency line is either unanswered or has terminal hold times. Precinct lobby closes at 3 PM, banker's hours? ~X(
Went back yesterday morning and was told that they were the proper venue to file fraud report. Nice female officer (who looked like she was not out of her teens) took my report, only complicated by the bulletproof window with a small slot at the bottom to pass ID, etc. (and sound) through.
The officer said that I should call the bank's fraud department and press them for more details regarding the attempted charges. Did that when I got back home and got a rep. who was a little more forthcoming. No more details regarding the who, but the disturbing fact that they had tried at least four other times to push through their $600 attempted charge.
Am now updating all of my stored payment info as I have automatic payments set up to pay my daughters' college tuition and housing.

What a Royal Pain! ~X(
At least I only lost the time it is taking to set things right and no lost money. The total could have been $2000.00 or more had it not been caught. #:-S

You have ten minutes to put that amount down on the France - Morocco game.
Good Luck!

PHXP, you said you called the number linked in the text. Here that is a red flag.

I made a large payment to a new contractor. Not long after I got a telephone message from a London number. My bank is based in Lancashire.

I searched the number and many reported it as scam. I contacted the bank online and they confirmed scam.

Got a second call from the London number.

Turned out that the bank had outsourced its fraud detection and not told its own staff.
