Re the scam reported by Angels, one of the first computer large frauds was in Japan in the 1970s, when a woman walked into a bank and said that she was expecting a large transfer into her recently established account, and that as soon as it came in, she would be withdrawing it in cash. Meanwhile, her partner walked into another branch, saying he was from IT and needed to do some checks on their software. During this, he asked them to do a transfer to a particular account, which would later be reversed. Of course, the account was his girlfriend's. She withdrew it, and he was out of the place before the fraud was discovered. She gave him the money and he vanished. She was later caught, but not him as far as I know.

The Reg says:

Microsoft has received more than 175,000 complaints about phone technical support scams since May last year, and Redmond says the "Hello I'm Joe from Windows Technical Support" callers will filch around US$1.5 billion from Americans this year.

Redmond in response increased its education awareness through the American Association of Retired Persons' Fraud Watch department.

"Since May 2014, Microsoft has received over 175,000 customer complaints regarding fraudulent tech support scams," Microsoft cybercrime center director David Finn says.

"This year alone, an estimated 3.3 million people in the United States will pay more than $1.5 billion to scammers."

Finn says Microsoft has partnered with law enforcement officials and is holding more events through the AARP.

Tech support scams are not just targeting seniors however.

Popular torrent site KickAss Torrents this week was serving fake phone tech support advertisements urging pirates to call local virtual phone numbers.

The fake blue screen of death screens also served on other dodgy websites attempts to scare users into believing their machines are infected.

I have just received an e-mail which begins:

Good news for you latop.....

As my name isn't Latop I'm wondering for whom the 'good news' is intended. Could it be "good news for your laptop" ?

Here goes another one. this is from my new Russian friend :

Hello my new friend!

Thanks for the answer, I am very pleased to receive your letter.
I am pleased that in this world there is a man who wants to meet me.
Now I know that people in your country really responsible!
I'm modest, so it is difficult to start dating.
But I hope that we can know each other better.
But when I started to write to you, I will write in this letter a little about yourself.
I will also send one of my photos.
My natural hair color is blond and gray eyes.
My birthday is the 10th of November 1980, on a horoscope I Scorpio.
Until 1998, I lived with my parents in the city of Grozny, but in 1998 my parents were killed.
Maybe you heard about this town, it's in the Chechen Republic, we call it a "hot spot."
I do not want to remember the horror, my parents were shot during that terrible war.
I was able to escape, and now I was alone.
After the death of my parents, my Government has granted me an apartment in the city of Vologda, far away from those places.
Now I live in a two-room apartment in the city of Vologda one.
I have no sisters or brothers, I'm the only child in the family.
Now I'll write a bit more detail about yourself.
From 7 years I was in high school in Grozny. I studied very well.
After high school I went to Vologda Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages Department.
In 2002, I graduated from college.
Since then, I have been working as a teacher in the school. I have been teaching foreign languages.
Of course it is - hard work, physically and psychologically, but I like this work.
Working with children is more difficult than working with adults.
I like my job and I am pleased that I can do something useful for the children.
I am a single woman, I have never been married, I have no children.
Perhaps it will seem strange, but in Russia only men need sex and alcohol.
they use girl, and then throw it as an unnecessary thing, I do not want such a relationship!
My friend suggested that I tried dating through the Internet.
And now I'm writing to you from the Internet cafe as I do not have your own computer.
The computer is very expensive, I can not afford it.
I would like us to know each other better.
I'm going to close the letter, but I hope to get your answer.
I would be very pleased to receive your letter and I hope to get it soon.
I hope that you understand my language.
With best wishes.

Your new friend from Russia Galina.

Unusually I was able to knock her (him more likely) off script pretty quickly by quoting from Lewis Carroll :

Great thank you.

Beware the jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!
He took his vorpal sword in hand; Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree And stood awhile in thought.
And, as in uffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came! One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

When can I come and see you?
Did you know your name means 'hen' in Spanish? Cluck cluck and all that

She/he saw through that as they normally just reply with a standard script .........

Why do you ignore my letter and did not say anything about yourself?

So my reply :

I am possibly somewhat less eloquent than your good self so I wrote you a poem.

Tuesday afternoon, I'm just beginning to see, Now I'm on my way.
It doesn't matter to me, Chasing the clouds away. Something calls to me,
The trees are drawing me near, I've got to find out why. Those gentle voices I hear,
Explain it all with a sigh. I'm looking at myself reflections of my mind, It's just the kind of day to leave myself behind.
So gently swaying through the fairyland of love, If you'll just come with me you'll see the beauty of,
Tuesday afternoon, Tuesday afternoon. Tuesday afternoon, I'm just beginning to see,
Now I'm on my way. It doesn't matter to me, Chasing the clouds away.
Something calls to me, The trees are drawing me near,I've got to find out why.
Those gentle voices I hear, Explain it all with a sigh.

What would you like to know? By the way how big are your tits?

I do so enjoy the stories of Capetonian's scammer wind ups! :-BD

Tell us Mate, do any of them ever wake up to you messing with their heads or do they keep biting? And how many have you eventually referred to 'the appropriate Authority?'

Not that I suspect that the Authorities in many of the Countries where these vermin reside would actually be prepared to do anything about them. X(

I use an add on called 'Mailhops' for my Thunderbird e-mail client.

It displays the country of origin for each e-mail.

Look at this one!

If one hovers over the 'Click Here To Verify', the URL HTTP://zimbrsystemlimit.weebly.com is displayed.

Some excellent websites where would-be scammers are themselves scammed.http://www.scamorama.com/ and http://www.419eater.com/ are typical. Some highly inventive names which the scammers appear to believe are genuine "Rev Wally Tightnuts", "Miss Ethel Wormvarnish", etc

Just want to add my thanks to Capetonian for resuming what was one of my favorite parts of the place.

I have read a lot of the stuff on the 419 baiters website with great amusement, and even made an audio recording of one response which lasted five minutes or more and which would be almost solid BLEEPs if it were ever to be broadcast on today's US tv.

The scambaiters' sites are pretty good but they can become addictive. I used to contribute.
I had some good scambaiting names :
Will Getchercourt, Uyara Koksuka, Iyama Scamma, Jouma Sep**es (very rude in ZA) ............

Anyway, latest from Galina ..............

I suspect that she's realised I'm taking the mick, but I've got another one on the go :

Hello !!
how are you? How your day? All is good? I hope that at you all perfectly. I am very glad that you have answered me, and I think it
will continue.

In this letter I want to tell you more about myself and about my family. I live with my mother in the city of Osa. I am an
only child and I have no brothers and sisters! My father now lives in another city and I do not keep in touch with him. He left the family
when I was 9 years old. My father drank a lot of alcohol and left us.

I do not like to talk about it. My mom retired and worked as a salesman in a grocery store. My mother's name is Marina. I'll send you
a photo of me and my mom and my photos from my childhood. I hope that it will be interesting to you. I really want to see your photos as
well. Tell me about your family?

I will continue writing. I learned a lot. I graduated from high school and university. Now, I work as assistant notary. I told you about it in the first letter. I'm looking for someone over the Internet, because I do not want to be with a man from Russia who do not respect women. I am very kind and grateful. but I do not like deception and disrespect. I like honest people. The bitter truth is better than sweet lies. I want a serious relationship and I will not play games. I need an honest and decent man. I do not care that you're older than me! Age does not matter - The main thing that was a good man!

May I ask you a few questions to get to know you.. . I would really like to know more about you? Where do you work? Do you have any hobbies? What is your favorite type of music? How do you like to spend weekends and holidays? Do you love to dance? What is your favorite holiday? I hope to hear from you soon. Please send me your picture. Your Mariya

Dear Mariya
With bated breath and wonderment did I read your latest missive. I looked at your photos with much pleasure and whilst your not exactly Wann King material, you are easy on the eye.

I don't work, I am of independent means so I spend most of my time flying round the world on my private jet, it's only a small one, so don't get over-excited at this juncture in our relationship, and I have a yacht in Monty Karlo. I hate dancing but it's a means to getting your end away so I accept it as a necessary evil.
I will send you a picture but I have to be very discrete in this regard.

I received an email today which Thunderbird tells me originated from "Mountain View, CA". It's short and to the point but still bears the hallmarks of an illiterate Nigerian scammer:

"Mountain View, CA" will always be the origin of emails from Hotmail as they don't divulge the original sender's IP, nor does Gmail. That's why scammers use them.

The email attachment will contain a .zip with a virus/trojan.

Sadly, people fall for this crap even if there is not the remotest chance that Lancashire Constabulary would have sent them an invoice. They think that 'having a look' can't do any harm.
It can!

Re my post #38:

22 Oct 2015 at 08:33, Kat Hall

Lancashire Police are warning ordinary folk not to open phishing email purporting to be from the plod.

Users have apparently been targeted in a "widespread" scam seeking to obtain personal information through a malware attachment.

"If you have opened an email or attachment from us and are now experiencing problems with your computer please follow the following advice," warned the police.

It advised users to run a virus check and quarantine any suspicious items highlighted by your anti-virus software/

"If you are a business user telephone your own IT department for further advice. We are aware of this issue and are working to resolve it, please do not contact us to report it," the police continued said.

In response to the scam, the force switched off its own email server in the process of investigating the issue.

Lancashire promised to provide users with further updates "as soon as possible." ®

Ordinary folk ? Cape, you out there ?
