We were within a gnats whisker of buying in Spain. We were going through an agent but people in the urbanisation said we should have asked them and they would put us in touch with the vendor and save money.

Actually it waz the agents that caused us to pull out. If they had left it to us we would have gone ahead. When we had doubts they increased the incentives, paying for part of the first year mortgage, increasing a cash back from €1,000 to €2,000, as well as paying for flights from UK etc.

Too much, so we pulled out.

August 2017:-

HMRC is closing many of its regional offices and opening larger offices.
Other local offices, including the giant base at the Triad in Bootle, will close with staff moving to Liverpool.
Staff will start moving in to the building from 2019 and eventually thousands of staff will be based there.

OK I haven't paid UK tax for 11 years Bootle was my Tax office then.

In case anyone thought I might have believed the call from HMRC to be genuine, I didn't. I am still waiting for my tax bill for 2019-2020 however. Was due on May 22nd but delayed "due to Covid". Of course!

Dominic Chappell, the former owner of BHS, has been sentenced to six years in jail for tax evasion.
A Southwark Crown Court jury found him guilty of failing to pay tax of around £584,000 on £2.2m of income he received after buying the failed chain for £1.
The court heard the 53-year-old spent the money on two yachts, a Bentley and a holiday to the Bahamas.

Chappell has been a director of various failed companies, and has been made bankrupt three times and entered into an individual voluntary arrangement once.
He was involved in the Island Harbour Marina development on the Isle of Wight.
It was reported in 2015 that Chappell, with the backing of investors, became the 90% owner of Retail Acquisitions, the firm that acquired British Home Stores (BHS) from Sir Philip Green for £1.
It subsequently transpired that instead of injecting new capital into the cash-strapped company as agreed with Arcadia, Chappell extracted £1,789,250 within three months of acquiring control of BHS.
During the 13-month period he controlled BHS, Chappell by his own admission, extracted a total of £2,627,643 from BHS.
On 26 April 2016, it was reported that when it became likely that BHS would be going into receivership, Chappell had moved £1.5 million from the firm to a company owned by a friend who was also a fellow board member of Retail Acquisitions.

Entrepreneur Dr Peter Dawe has set up the Wash Tidal Barrier Corporation to raise private capital to fund the scheme which could be completed as early as 2012 and cost as much as £3bn.

This from 2008. An 11 mile barrier in 4 years from the start of fund raising. At the time he was careful not to invite people on the ground.
