Airport names

#1 Post by wings folded » Sat Dec 16, 2017 4:59 pm

An exchange on WOE gave me the idea of a mild, harmless and fairly pointless game.
The object is to give the old name, then the new name for an airport, and the city or town it serves.
I'll get you started:
Speke, John Lennon, Liverpool
Satolas, St Exupery, Lyon
Over to you.

D F Malan, Cape Town International, CPT
Jan Smuts, O R Tambo, JNB
Ben Schoeman, East London Airport, ELS
H F Verwoerd, Port Elizabeth International (?) Airport, PLZ
Louis Botha, King Shaka International, DUR (not the same physical airport).

All renamed in the interest of political correctness and trying to bury the past.

Capetonion is not 100% currect about one answer.

Between Jan Smuts and O R Tambo, it was known as Johannesburg International.

Only about 5 years ago, within 5 km of the airport, you could still find all 3 names in use on different signposts.

Flying as SLF on Air Mauritius, shortly after the 1st name change, the 'We will shortly be landing' message was at Jan Smuts!
If we'd been on SAA someone would have had their hand slapped.

Kidlington is now Oxford London Airport and Lydd is now Ashford London Airport.

Hurn is now Bournemouth International Airport and Squires Gate Airport is now Blackpool International Airport.

Lydd is the only one that doesn't outrageously rip off motorists for parking, (its free) and serves the best chips, only down side is you can't actually fly anywhere from it, except Le Tourqet.

I had a friend who named her dog Idlewilde the same time the airport name was changed. She groused that the media seemed to ignore her event.

I am inexplicably angered by name changes for any reason. Many US airports have been renamed and some like Newark are just silly. Others have been named for people for whom I have very little or no respect.

The re-naming of sports stadiums (stadaii ??) has resulted in my having NO idea where certain games are being played.

Good game though. Ignore my bah humbug and please carry on happily. Seriously.

Malvern Municipal Pool - Harold Holt Memorial Swimming Centre. Don't you love the irony.

Anyone else around that remembers the day we changed from the WWII Able, Baker, Charlie Dog phonetic alphabet, to the NATO standard Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta one?

It was in 1954, the chaos started at Lindholme when the guys on the Sqdns started doing the VHF checks during the pre-flights.

I was on duty in ARSF manning the VHF test rig and answering all the test calls.

I didn't start learning that until 1956, and it was the present one then. Except.... in Singapore for anyone not associated with aviation, when they use country or city names - A for Afghanhistan, B for Bangkok, C for Calcutta ( not Changi ! that's ch not c ) D for Denmark etc. Not sure if there was an "Official" approved list, or if everyone just made up their own, but the system was in common useage.

Talking of changes reminds me of Högertrafikomläggningen or Dag H when Sweden changed from driving on the right side of the road to the wrong side, that is, from left to right. Civilised countries drive on the left, it's only foreigners that drive on the wrong side. Not to mention those like India that drive anywhere where there's a gap.
