Yom Kippur today. I hope that for those who observe it, it's a peaceful and fulfilling one.

Thank you, that reminds me that I should wish my Jewish friends well over the fast, as I suppose 'Happy Yom Kippur' isn't quite right since it's their day of atonement and they cover themselves in sackcloth and ashes, and there is wailing and gnashing of teeth, and they starve themselves for the day.

Candlemas Day, a Christian festival celebrated on 2 February. It marks the end of Epiphany, the Purification of the Virgin Mary, and the Presentation of Christ in the Temple

Today is the first day of the rest of your life. That's a blessing for some and a real pisser for others.

They eat pancakes here for Candlemas, a bit like us on Shrove Tuesday.

Also Groundhog Day, I understand. Translated here as "Le jour des marmottes" which sounds way cuter.

It's work bloody hard Day. While SWMBO is out blowing 3 figures on a "cut and colour" at the hairdresser, I've cleaned the car mats, did a shopping at Aldi, sorted out years of paperwork (99% mine, I admit) got the bedroom carpet estimate sorted out and accepted, and I've to make tea early so she doesn't have a full tum at her yoga class. How did I find time to earn a decent living for all these years? 'Kinell.

Today was dishwasher repair day with the repair man "who can" arriving, me having locked the two slavering hounds in the bedroom to prevent repairman washicide, at 07:30 to fix failing item under the policy that covers fridge, stove, washing machine and dishwasher.

This today as opposed to yesterday when me and man with car diagnostic machine removed better half's car radiator to get enough leverage to use hammer and punch to dig recalcitrant failed and completely jammed electronic sensor out of the side of the crankcase adjacent to the flywheel. Bugger of a job but sensor removal and replacement completed in the dark with rain streaming down. Not much fun but car fixed and running again with Engine Management ECU reset and the pleasure of knowing it cost about 1/3 of the amount the dealer quoted to do the job, even when taking the cost of one's own labour into account.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring, jammed starter motor on aircraft, finger caught in half opened pilchard tin, leaking ball cock . Time is our lobster!

Magnus, maybe you should book that 10k trip, it might be safer ^#(^

60 years ago today the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank moved for the first time. Were you there Wodders? I used to cycle there from home.

Not at 7yo no, obviously driven past countless times.
In a previous life as a Radio Amateur I wrote to uncle Bernie on behalf of a group of us requesting use of the dish for Amateur Earth - Moon - Earth communication. The idea being that we would be the biggest signal off the moon ever and could be received with modest equipment. The reflected signal off the moon is normally quite weak and among several requirements is an unusually large antenna.
I received a terse response, negative, it's been done. :)

Today, August 10, is the feast day of St Blane, born on the island of Bute around 565AD; became a monk, bishop, and pilgrim.
Devotion to Blane soon followed his death, was widespread in Scotland, and very popular; his monastery became the site of the cathedral of Dunblane.

Reputed miracle worker, including bringing the young son of a British chief back to life, curing the blind, and lighting fire by making small bolts of lightning jump between his fingers - sometimes I do wonder about time-travel... :-?
And with the morn, those angel faces smile...

On this day, May 24th, two hundred years ago, was born Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandrina Victoria of Kent.

It used to be Empire Day, commonly known as cracker night. Also, our wedding anniversary. That's a coincidence.

My grandson's 7th birthday. He wants to be a pilot and fly a Dash 8.
One morning during a visit when he was four, I found him sitting in a cardboard box on the living room floor, making airplane noises.

Me: "Is that your airplane?"
"Yes, it's a Dash 8."
"I don't see any passengers..."
Two second delay.."It's a freighter."
"Oh, ok, where you headed?"
Two second delay again.. "Wabush."

Most kids would have said New York, London, or some such. He was headed to western Labrador.

Isn't it Father's Day today or did the Western feminazis stomp it out of existence?

Maybe if you're an islamic black dad you can get away with celebrating it.
