I remember being jealous of other boys who were allowed liquorice sticks to clean their teeth. I had to use a toothbrush.

I nominate myself.
Went out to finish cementing around the balanced flue outlet for the Central Heating. On the way past the timer, thought the house a bit cool and turned the heating on. Before I passed out, came back in and turned the heating off again.

Does this event merit a place in these awards, or do the speed freaks here wish to demure?

The expression “quit whilst you’re ahead” would seem apt but doubtless some here will disagree...

Man cutting palm tree goes on wild ride
A California arborist's unconventional way of cutting a severely bending palm tree left him swinging wildly side to side.

REDLANDS, Calif. - A man's unconventional way of cutting a palm tree resulted in him taking a wild ride.

Video taken in Redlands, California, showed the arborist near the top of the severely bending palm tree.

The man began cutting the top of the tree with a chainsaw. But once the top of the tree was removed, the trunk rebounded dramatically, taking the man on a hair-raising ride.

The person who recorded the video told Storyful it was a scary sight, but said the man on the tree “was not afraid, because he has been doing that work for a long time.”

Separate video showed the unorthodox tree surgeon climbing back down once the trunk stabilized.

Police investigate flamethrower stunt atop NYC bus
"The reckless individual who torched over the top of an occupied city bus put New Yorkers, including the bus operator, in life-threatening peril," the MTA said.

The New York Police Department is investigating a Nov. 8 incident that involved a person using a flamethrower atop a New York City bus, according to NBC New York.

"We don't even need to say how absurd, dangerous and just plain stupid this was," Metropolitan Transportation Authority Communications Director Tim Minton told NBC New York. "The reckless individual who torched over the top of an occupied city bus put New Yorkers, including the bus operator, in life-threatening peril."

"We are grateful the courageous actions of the operator in moving riders to safety minimized risk, and are cooperating fully with the NYPD investigation."

A rapper named Dupree G.O.D posted videos of the apparent stunt on his social media accounts. His Instagram account is currently private, but his YouTube account contains public videos of men shooting flamethrowers toward each other. His Twitter account shared a drone video of the flamethrower stunt.

The use of drones is strictly regulated and mostly banned in New York City due to the close proximity of many major airports.

Elliot Bey, the owner of nearby wine store Franklin Cellars, told NBC New York he shut his shop down and the stunt went on for hours. "It's unsafe, it's just crazy," Bey said.

"That being said, if I was looking at a movie, or if I was at the circus it would be fine," Bey added.

There were no reported injuries. Owning or using a flamethrower is not illegal in New York City or state.

Police say the man broke into the house and attacked his estranged girlfriend. While the suspect was in the processes of beating and choking the woman, her mother and sister came to her aid. During the altercation the suspect was stabbed and beaten with a golf club.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Los Angeles County coroner's office identified the man as Justin Goss of Glendale.

The woman was transported to the local hospital and treated for facial injuries and has since been released.

Australian woman dies trying to take photo at edge of 262-foot cliff #-o
Jessie Yeung, CNN • Published 14th December 2020

(CNN) — A woman in Australia fell off a cliff to her death on Saturday after trying to take a photo at the precarious location.
Rosy Loomba, 38, was with her husband and child when the accident occurred at Grampians National Park, in Australia's Victoria state, according to CNN affiliate Nine News. They were at Boroka Lookout, an overhang by the side of the cliff that has a panoramic view of the mountains and town below.

Police said Loomba climbed past safety barriers and warning signs, to pose on a rock for a photo when she tripped over the edge, falling more than 80 meters (about 262 feet) down the cliff face, according to Nine News.
Witnesses heard Loomba screaming, but were unable to help. Police and the state emergency service worked for six hours to scale the cliff and retrieve her body.
The viewing platform was closed throughout the afternoon during the retrieval process, but was reopened to the public by 10 p.m.
The lookout is a particularly popular photo spot; a quick search of the location tag on Instagram shows dozens of photos showing people at the cliffside, legs dangling over the edge, or balanced on a narrow rock near the edge. A few even filmed themselves doing backflips by the edge.

Local tour guide Graham Wood told Nine News he had warned his customers about the lookout just half an hour before Loomba's fall. "I made a comment to my customers, that this (people climbing over the barrier) happens all the time," he said. "And one of these days, someone's going to fall off. I'm sad that it's happened."
In the aftermath, authorities reminded the public to heed safety signs and guidelines, and that no photo is worth a person's life.
"We can't rope off every part of Victoria," said Police Minister Lisa Neville. "People have to take responsibility."

Before the coronavirus pandemic halted the travel industry, destinations from Kyoto to the Czech Republic had to institute photography bans due to risky behavior.

Darwin touting for business, obviously losing too many promising candidates to Covid: https://www.garda.ie/en/about-us/our-de ... ting-.html
An Garda Síochána have been made aware of a social media trend circulating online called ‘ghosting’. This ongoing trend challenges persons to lie on a roadway with a sheet placed over them in an attempt to stop oncoming traffic. This activity is extremely irresponsible and poses a serious danger to those taking part in the ‘ghosting’ and motorists.

Gardaí attended an incident in the southern region in recent days where a youth received a number of minor injuries while participating in this activity. Emergency services escorted the youth to hospital where she is being treated for injuries sustained to her back, torso and ankle. She was admitted to hospital for a number of days.

An Garda Síochána are urging people not to engage in this social media trend. Gardaí are particularly appealing to parents to educate their children on the dangers of participating in such activity and to highlight the importance of being seen while using Irish roads.

Ho Oh No! Santa gets tangled up in some power lines
By Scottie Andrew, CNN

Santa rescued after getting stuck in power lines

(CNN)Instead of helming Santa's sleigh, a Santa Claus impersonator took to the skies in a hang glider-like aircraft to spread some early holiday cheer -- and wound up tangled in power lines.

The would-be Kris Kringle was safely rescued on the Sunday before Christmas after spending an hour suspended above the ground in Rio Linda, a city in California's Sacramento County.
His mishap, however festive, shows why civilians should perhaps leave the more magical elements of Christmas to the real jolly old man in red.

The Santa told officials he was in the area delivering candy canes to local children, said county Fire Capt. Christopher Vestal.

Without Santa's reindeer, the man delivered his gifts in a recreational aircraft that the fire department described as a "hyper light." It uses a small motor and "blower" to propel it while a large parachute catches the wind and keeps it in flight, Vestal said.
The department still isn't sure how Santa wound up where he did -- recreational aircraft like his don't need to report their flight patterns, Vestal said.
But at one point during his flight, his "sleigh" and its large chute got tangled up in the lines.

When California Highway Patrol of North Sacramento and fire crews arrived, the craft was hanging off one side of the power lines.
Despite the glider's precarious position, Santa wasn't in danger of falling onto the pavement below, Vestal said, because he was wearing a seatbelt.

"Without any doubt, the restraints prevented him from injury and likely saved not only Santa's life, but Christmas," he said.
A local utility company "de-energized" the power lines before the fire crew made their rescue.
With Metro Fire employees dangling from a large ladder, Santa was safely lowered to the ground within an hour of the team's arrival.
Claus wasn't injured at any point during the entanglement or rescue, Vestal said.
Though the fire department regularly responds to small aircraft incidents at nearby airports, Vestal said this was its first Santa rescue.

An honorable mention at best.
