Re: Darwin Awards
Woody, the only qualification I see is driving a Ferrari, other than that murder victims don't count. Am I missing something?

Driving a Ferrari through Soweto at night, definitely needs removing from the gene pool

Re: Darwin Awards
This one caught my jaded eye yesterday. It is not really Darwin material as he wasn't killed etc. and while I am sorry that this chap was hurt, there does seem to have been an element of brain fade on his part, before his brain injury, when he agreed to do this stunt. He is an engineer after all, and should have known, or be able to calculate, given that there is a good reason that crash test dummies are used in such impact analysis!

A television presenter has been awarded £1.6m in damages after he suffered brain and spine injuries while acting as a “crash test dummy” in a science programme.
Jeremy Stansfield won a High Court battle with the BBC on Friday, with Dame Justice Amanda Yip ruling that the injuries he received in 2013 had derailed his “successful career in television” and restricted his enjoyment of life.
The BBC had argued that Mr Stansfield suffered “little more than a moderate whiplash injury with depressive symptoms”, but agreed to pay “two thirds of the damages assessed as being caused by injuries”.
An engineer by background, Mr Stansfield, who is known as “Jem”, was a presenter on Bang Goes The Theory, which ran for eight seasons between 2009 and 2014.
In the episode which gave rise to the claim, Mr Stansfield assumed the role of a human “crash test dummy” for a feature comparing the safety of forward and rearward-facing child car seats – with two crashes performed in each direction.
He was strapped into a rig like a go-cart which was propelled along a track into a post, Ms Justice Yip said, adding that, in the introduction to the segment, the presenter explained that he had calculated the experiment to give a similar crash profile to hitting a lamppost in a real car in an urban environment.
In the episode, he can be heard remarking that he is “a little nervous” about the stunt, adding: “I’m forward-facing, I’m heading for a solid-steel bar. How bad can it be?”
Ms Justice Yip said: “It is not in dispute, and perhaps not surprising, that the claimant suffered some injury. What is contentious is the extent of that injury and the consequences for the claimant.”
The judge ruled that Mr Stansfield, aged 42 when the television episode was filmed, suffered injury to his brain, spine and audio-vestibular system during the crash tests.

Re: Darwin Awards
He could technically qualify if the injury has impeded his reproductive processes.
Re: Darwin Awards
On the bright side, instead of a TV career, he is now qualified for a new one as a crash test dummy.

Man dies after falling while subway surfing on top of J train on Williamsburg Bridge
https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/02/us/nyc-m ... index.html
CNN)A man in New York City died early Saturday morning while subway surfing on top of the J-train on the Williamsburg Bridge.
The 32-year-old man lost his footing, fell from the train onto the tracks, and was struck by an incoming train, the New York Police Department (NYPD) confirmed to CNN.
Officers found him "unconscious and unresponsive" around 4:35 a.m. and emergency medical services pronounced him dead at the scene.
Authorities have not yet identified the individual.
The J-train was suspended between Broad Street and Marcy Avenue and was delayed as a result of the incident, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Normal service has since resumed.
"Riding on top of trains is not smart," MTA Spokesperson Tim Minton told CNN.
Thrill seekers often find their way on top of the train cars in attempts to surf the subway. In 2019, a 14-year-old boy died after getting struck while subway surfing, CNN affiliate Spectrum News NY1 reported.

Understatement of the year award right here, I'd say."Riding on top of trains is not smart," MTA Spokesperson Tim Minton told CNN.
Re: Darwin Awards
Technically this one should be in last year's awards but I just noticed it.

Budding blonde candidate...

This chap could be a worthy winner.

It seems that one of these budding criminals is practicing for the Darwin award. The old one flash and your ash comes to mind.

Re: Darwin Awards
Many years ago in my part of the world, those three would have been taken out the back of the Police Station by a couple of beefy Senior Sergeants for a 'full and frank discussion of their behaviour!'

Many years ago then GF & I and another couple were stopped at lights behind another car when for no reason, the occupants got out and attempted to drag us out for a fight. Unbeknown to all of us, the car behind us was an unmarked police car, and the would be assailants were quickly collared.
When they were secured, one of the police said to us "Would you like to press charges, or would you like to leave them with us?" There is only one answer to that question.
