When they were secured, one of the police said to us "Would you like to press charges, or would you like to leave them with us?" There is only one answer to that question.
Many years ago in my part of the world, those three would have been taken out the back of the Police Station by a couple of beefy Senior Sergeants for a 'full and frank discussion of their behaviour!'
+1 to both of those!

The old-fashioned and now, of course, 'totally unacceptable' extremely cheap and effective way of dealing with scrotes.

Did you ask how many flights of stairs they were going to fall down/doors they would bump into on their way to being interviewed?

Exactly! I should have mentioned also, that after the Senior Sergeants had their discussion with the offenders, that they were then delivered to their Parents with the explanation that any bruising was as a result of incidents quoted above.

And quite often the respective Fathers of the offenders delivered further chastisement, generally with a leather belt!

When I was being brought up we had a fireplace with brass rail under the mantle for drying stuff. At the end hung a leather belt. All Mother had to say was that she would tell my Father when he got home and I would get the belt, I would be good for the rest of the day.
I suppose in this modern day if the same rules were in effect Mum and Dad would be in jail for cruelty and I would be in care being educated to work for the drug gangs.

New York man burst into flames after Taser used on him, police say

The man had doused himself with hand sanitizer before the confrontation at the Catskill Police Department.

CATSKILL, N.Y. — An upstate New York man was in grave condition at a hospital after he burst into flames after police used a Taser to subdue him, authorities said Friday.

The Times Union of Albany reported that 29-year-old man walked into the Catskill village police department last weekend and got into a confrontation with officers. Chief Dave Darling confirmed to the newspaper that officers deployed a Taser to subdue the man, who had just doused himself with hand sanitizer, and the man then burst into flames.

Darling said the officers were familiar with the man from previous encounters.

“I think they were afraid he was going to hurt himself, and that’s what started it,” Darling said. “There are still details that we’re trying to develop.”

The man was taken to the Westchester Medical Center’s Trauma and Burn Center, where he was in grave condition, the Times Union said.

The police chief described the situation as “horrible” and said it was under investigation by the Greene County district attorney’s office.

Kevin A. Luibrand, an attorney for the man’s family, declined to discuss details but said he had asked the police to preserve all recordings and written materials related to the encounter.

Darling said that his officers are not equipped with body cameras but that there are video cameras in the police station.

There are still details that we’re trying to develop.
My object all sublime
I shall achieve in time—
To let the evidence fit the crime.

At least 92 dead after oil tanker explodes in Sierra Leone

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone — An oil tanker exploded near Sierra Leone's capital, killing at least 92 people and severely injuring dozens of others after large crowds gathered to collect leaking fuel, officials and witnesses said Saturday.

The explosion took place late Friday after a bus struck the tanker in Wellington, a suburb just to the east of Freetown.

The mortuary at Connaught Hospital reported 92 bodies had been brought in by Saturday morning. About 30 severely burned victims were not expected to survive, according to staff member Foday Musa.

Injured people whose clothes had burned off in the fire that followed the explosion lay naked on stretchers as nurses attended to them Saturday.

Video obtained by The Associated Press of the explosion's aftermath showed a giant fireball burning in the night sky as some survivors with severe burns cried out in pain. Charred remains of the victims lay strewn at the scene awaiting transport to mortuaries.

President Julius Maada Bio, who was in Scotland attending the United Nations climate talks Saturday, deplored the “horrendous loss of life.”
“My profound sympathies with families who have lost loved ones and those who have been maimed as a result,” he tweeted.

Vice President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh visited two hospitals overnight and said Sierra Leone’s National Disaster Management Agency and others would “work tirelessly” in the wake of the emergency.

“We are all deeply saddened by this national tragedy, and it is indeed a difficult time for our country,” he said on his Facebook page.

Unfortunately that's happened often enough that it's no longer novel.

Telegraph - honourable mention, try harder next time

Man blows himself up using fireworks to kill garden mole
Nick Squires
A CZECH man was seriously injured after he tried to rid his garden of a mole using powerful fireworks.

The 45-year-old packed the F4-type “Dum Bum” explosives inside the mole tunnel, covered them with concrete tiles and decided to stand on top. For fireworks that contain this material, it is usually recommended one stands 80ft away.

When he detonated the explosives, the ensuing blast was far greater than anything he had anticipated.

Neighbours heard the explosion and saw smoke rise from the man’s garden, in the town of České Budějovice, south of Prague. The man broke both his legs and was taken to hospital.
