Marra, as a slang word for a mate, derives from a local pronunciation of marrow, which has been used to mean “companion” or “workmate” since the 1400s.

Spooky thing I realised about the fire pictures is that it was on this day three years ago that we last had a fire up there and I took a bunch of pictures back then.

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread IV
Well now, we're moving out 'cos Derby City are knocking down the church to build a new slum, and the organ pipes won't fit into our new place. So 'er and me went off to see our local Steptoe and Son to do a bit of dealing, having squeezed one of the smaller pipes into the car. (the one missing from the picture.)
Long story short, one of the customers of the equally-dodgy garage next door was a bit anxious to get away (I didn't ask) and left me with a scratch down the portside of my car. "Don't worry, mate. Ask 'im at the garage to put it right. I'll pay. Here's me card. See ya." And off he went.
Seems genuine if a bit slap-dash.
And Mr Steptoe hasn't decided if he wants to buy about 80 kilos of lead-tin alloy, either.
A not very satisfactory morning. Almost worthy of a rant.

Mrs C16 is not best pleased with me. When the pole came out of the socket in the ground earlier this evening the suddenness of that surprised her and the pole hit her on the head. My shout of "Oomph!" when my end reared up between my legs - stupid boy - and struck my unmentionables fell on deaf ears. The new anemometer cartridge is installed, the pole is back vertical and all is working normally - apart from my unmentionables which are still suffering....CharlieOneSix wrote: ↑Sat Jul 11, 2020 3:20 pm.....Just waiting for the wind to drop so Mrs C16 and I can safely lower the 25ft pole to which my weather station and anemometer are attached.....

Jim,
Please try to dispose of those pipes another way. There has to be an organ restoration group or similar to whom those pipes would be invaluable. Craftmanship in the scrapper Ugh.

Agree with Boing as a pipe organ aficionado.

Reminds me, I knew someone who habitually spelt "mirror" as "mirrow".
I surmised it was because to him the sound was reminiscent of "tomorrer" and he knew how *that* was spelt.

Morning folks. Perishing. Couldn't get out of bed until after 7.
This is the largest organ (no jokes) I have ever played. Manchester Town Hall.

Jim, good luck with the scratch. I dinged a car illegally parked, not a scratch on mine. She thanked me for leaving my phone number and g it a quote about £750. She thought too much and a my gave her a quote £350. Good on her shopping around. I gave her £400 so pay for taxis too.
You need to get the 'mate' who fixes yours to add a hire car to the cost.

Looks like there has been a very light rain overnight nothing measured.
Busy day looms,

Best get on with breakfast.

Jim,
Try here https://www.ebay.co.uk/b/Pipe-Organs/16219/bn_55186485, this is what you might do if you have the time, they will be much more valuable than scrap prices and may be put to use somewhere.
Go for a total respray and charge it to the flash geezer, he might drive with more care in future.
Mr sun is out, allotment for an hour then the Royal Oak for refreshments.

Speaking of bees, which we were several posts back now, Mr J Clarkeson has got a wonderful item in today's
Sunday Times about his latest endeavour at bee-keeping. Amongst the Comment posts was one from a bee-keeper
who recommended that anyone interest in keeping bees should read "Hive and the Honey-bee: A Bee-keepers Manual"
by the Rev. L.L. Langstroth which is apparently a must for bee-keepers. It's available to download free in the Kindle version.

Just showed a video clip of the Aust Defence Force deploying to the Victoria/NSW border to control flow of potential Covid carriers. Didn't see any guns, RPG's or materials to make IED's. What a bunch of namby pamby's.

How did it turn out? Did you manage to write history and persuade your better half about the wing walking experience?TheGreenGoblin wrote: ↑Sat Jul 11, 2020 1:35 pmRwy in Sight wrote: ↑Sat Jul 11, 2020 12:06 pmApologies for the aviation note but a Skycrane helicopter just flew over RiS family secondary residence. Fortunately the fire is across the sea.
I shall use your "bad example" and post some more aviation trivia...
Back in the air today for the first time in four months. This outfit have taken the portakabin next to the helicopter school. I am trying to persuade my better half that wing walking is the way to go...
Wing Walkers.JPG
Twas all happening today, Spitfires, parachutists, aerobatics, Tiger Moths, Wing Walkers and little old me, all in the circuit...
I bought the disposable Wilkinson razor (the cheapest I could find) and I am positively impressed. Maybe we should start a thread about shaving and another one about boycotting companies we disagree with their policies like Gillette.

C16, regarding fencing, I was chatting to a judge who fences. He asked what I preferred, and I said foil. He replied "Foil? No, I prefer épée; foil's far too intellectual for me". Must admit, I'd never thought of it that way.

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread IV
Another one who committed aviation yesterday!
Took Sproglette Junior for a 5 hour bimble around the East of England. Started with lots of tight, strong thermals and by the end of the day, slow lazy ones.
Sproglette flew the tow and release and took the first thermal. Lots of other aircraft about so we played 'lookout' where the first person to see another aircraft wins a quid. Great way to teach good lookout. However, I think I might be a couple of quid down. Those young eyes!
Told her to fly the 60k back to our place which she did well without GPS and let her finish with a low pass (well, lowish) and a pull up into a lazy thermal as the day was coming to an end. "Stay up as long as you can but stay within gliding range of the airfield." Good practice in getting the last bit of energy out of a thermal.
She did the approach and landing. Both good.
It's strange that Sproglette Senior has absolutely no interest in flying het her little sister, just 13 now, simply cannot get enough.
Have the loan of another two seater tomorrow!
