I was on HMS Belfast's last trip in the summer of 1963 before she was decommissioned. As officer cadets at Dartmouth we had to do a project during the summer break so a mate and I volunteered to look after 30 Sea Cadets each on Belfast for a jolly from Portsmouth to Gibraltar and back. On the return leg we passed the SS Uganda which had a load of schoolkids on board and Belfast fired her 6 inch guns for the last time as we passed by. I recall that broke a lot of the fine glassware in the Wardroom....

I see Guy Martin is on Channel 4 tonight in a programme which documents his attempt at reaching 100mph in a tractor. Old news - the youngsters round here drive their tractors like that on our narrow roads every day.

Wasn't C16, our own UP victim of such a driver?

Last week I bought a Mi Fitness band, mainly because it relays info from my phone which I never take out of my pocket when in London. To my surprise a weather alert popped up on it today for strong winds. Said alert not appearing on phone.
We might have a similar/identical band I have the version 3. They need to talk to each other and maybe the weather on the phone updated, it was passed on the band and you saw it there. The band today was showing cloudy weather for today and Monday and sunny on Tuesday - after I connected the two the weather on the band updated to the forecast from the phone.

Nice pic OFSO!

The 4 has a colour touch screen. All good but the 'rubber' wrist band is poor. Have a replacement s/steel band on order. Otherwise an amazing little device.

Spend a lot of time on the Thames, usually walking one way on the Thames Path, then on the Clipper the other. Will be taking the little 'uns on the Belfast next school holidays.

I know the 4 is great but for the time I am still investigating the usefulness of such a device - mine was a gift from a friend for some assistance I offered him. The 3 is useful for the steps, the weather and the timer (for cooking). Looking forward for your comment on the steel band - my main issue with the "rubber" version comes from a poor performance on hot days, it irritates my wrist but that's for next summer to cause trouble.

My first thought on seeing that Belfast picture was that I didn't remember that bit of the superstructure. Yes, it is hideous.

Another thundery thing in the sky to the south of us. A cold-weather storm. Very odd. Do you chaps living in snowy countries ever get thunderstorms in winter ?

RAIN Just had a good shower but easing off now.

The MUB wx forecaster has done it again. He was forecasting CAVOK with the actual saying CB and rain. So he changed the TAF and backdated it three hours.

The late FSL often referred to The Shard as "The Spelk" ; a term used on Tyneside to describe a splinter of wood usually found in one's fingers after climbing fences/trees/handling rough cut timber.

Off to me lock restoration site -aka "The Somme" - for another day of trudging through the clarts.

I watched that Guy Martin programme last night - the tractor's top speed was 153MPH!!! Heaven forbid it becomes the must-have school-run vehicle.
It's always my fault - SWMBO

Morning everyone, survived the Swedish furniture store, just got to put it all together, but that’s something to look forward to later in the week :-o

Off to Portsmouth today, meeting with my Norwegian Best Man and his English Wife, probably a liquid lunch, hopefully the trains are not on strike.
When all else fails, read the instructions.

.......survived the Swedish furniture store, just got to put it all together,
The last excrescence I had the misfortune to be involved with contained an Instruction Manual that stated in large letters on the first page ... Max. 30 minutes to assemble.

I took 40 mins. to identify and tick off all the parts, screws and assorted fasteners, and the first drawer - of three - was finally assembled 2 hours from the start of the exercise, tho' the remaining two were assembled in slightly less time after the first experience. Then I started on the chest assembly to accommodate them.

Can I sue for misreprentation ?

To be fair to IKEA it wasn't them but some Chinese Lookalike.

Still a PITA

I recall "thundersnow" during at least one winter, most uncanny sound.
And with the morn, those angel faces smile...

CCTV folk have just left. Five days work now instead of the one we paid for. He says he will not charge us any more as he has never fitted a wireless system before and it was a steep learning curve. The problem has been the size of the estate and the distance between the cameras and the control box. Also stone walls and in one case a metal mesh, in the eaves to keep out vermin, between the camera and the box. All eight cameras now working and recording but we need to upgrade our internet to see it on our smart phones.

I think a live CCTV feed from Botswana available on Ops Normal would be a major asset. We could all watch the hippos, bats, pelicans, and the occasional NR running off down the road with your possessions under his arms.....

My own cameras provide utterly boring feeds. No visitors because no Viewings at the London house as sales are at zero, all waiting for December 12th, even the mice have left, and worse in Spain as new 'government' tries to assemble itself and unemployment rises to new highs. Front yard cam currently showing rain.

As far south as the River Tees, it is a 'Spell'.

Actually we do have a camera which covers the boat and lagoon which would pick up the hippos, when there is water there. As for running down the 'road', no road to run down, just through the bush.

Another dead cow. Fortunately on the opposite bank and not downwind.
