I didn't realize you were a bee keeper, UP. Useful little buggers, bees. 🐝

Much to my shame, about 20 years or so ago, I am afraid I was responsible for wiping out a colony.

My recollection is that I had come over from RAFG to fly a comp from, I think, Bicester. Didn't do particularly well in the comp and it duly became time to go home. I had towed my caravan there and my ground crew had towed the Discus. Went to hook up the car only to find the gas bottle and general junk box perched on the towing triangle had become a behive🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

Now I'm an animal lover and did understand the importance of bees. So, I called variously; the RSPCA ("They are protected. Offence to interfere with them"), police and other organizations. No one was prepared to come and do that smoke stuff and rescue the poor buggers and I had a ferry to catch that evening.

So, put on beanie hat, flying suit and flying gloves, improvised a mask with mosquito net fro the van and hooked up the car and drove down to Dover.

On the ferry, I checked and there were still about 50 of the poor buggers hanging on. They were still there when I got back.

Still feel guilty about it.

If you want to keep a swarm it's very simple to catch it.

You put a cardboard box upsidedown on the ground with a bee lure inside and propped up a bit at one end. They will crawl in to the dark space, especially in the late evening. You simply slide a lid under the box when most of the bees are in the box and take them home. You then decant them into a new hive and the job is done.

At this time of year most beekeepers carry a box and a lure in the car on the offchance of spotting a swarm cluster. It's very satisfying to find a collect a new colony like that. They're worth about a hundred quid.

Lars, you should have phoned your local beekeeper. There are beekeeping clubs online and there will always be someone looking for new free colony.

The problem we have is that people think that we can deal with wasps. They're a totally different animal. Not in anyway related to bees, and we know almost nothing about them.

Here's a tip. Bee venom is of opposite pH to wasp venom. The mnemonic for remembering which palliative to use on a sting is: Winegar for Vasps and Bicarb for Bees.

One of my colleagues on me canal is a bee-keeper and he travels far and wide to sort out a swarm and add to his hives.
It's always my fault - SWMBO

A fellow councillor who was also a beekeeper (on a minor scale) has just emerged from hospital after anaphylactic shock from being stung.
Was, apparently a full blues and twos transfer to the regional specialist hospital (the centralisation of consultant care is annoying when it is 30 miles away - we have a proper large modern local hospital but 'serious' cases are taken direct to the regional hospital which has 24 hour consultant care which is deemed to be more efficient as patients receive proper diagnosis and care, faster discharge, but it's inconvenient for visitors of friends and family as there is no direct public transport -- an hour into the city and a further hour to the 'specialist emergency' hospital).

UP's account of bee behaviour is fascinating.
Like ants (as a child I used to watch wood ants in a nearby forest), they obviously have an intelligence directing their behaviour.
Even domestic household ants have a sense of purpose.

There's a bee saviour mob outside town where we live. Give 'em a ring and some guys will come over and take away the hive. Free service too. Saves time and effort flame-throwing the bloody thing.

Ants are safe as long as they stay outside the house. We don't stomp drown nor penny-bung their nests. Owing to the wife's Buddhist belief we do not wantonly take life no matter how lowly or simple it may be. 😌

But the moment they step INSIDE they're dead! 😠

That's my general approach too - outside we can coexist, inside they're dead. Except spiders, I'm generally on good terms with the local spiders.

Morning folks, very interesting UP. Yep we will not kill anything apart from squirrels and rats inside. Will not even kill a snake inside as they don't cause any damage.

Wedding finished at 01.00 think the hotel owner insisted. Musicians never turned up but loud music. Just seen the groom apparently they are still married but she is still in bed.

Our mate in hospital is still OK. Brother coming from Stockholm to escort him home when he is fit to move. He says that he knew public hospitals here were pretty grim but it is an understatement.

Another bright sunny day in London. Down in Rotherhyde yesterday, a sailing barge came down the Thames, gaff-rigged of course but dark red sails furled so under power. Passed very close to the south bank. I had no idea how big they were. Very impressive. Lots of other commercial traffic too.

My garden is full of self seeded foxgloves, some over 6 feet high, each one has bees bustling about with their heads in the flowers, lovely to sit amongst.

Taking Misty to the cattery for her summer holiday, I wonder if their maximum security cages can hold her, I do hope so, at least the wildlife in the garden will have a respite.

Will send you a postcard from Wales.

Morning,
Same as *Ibbieville* without the breeze, passing 23 could be 29 or 30 by the end of the day.

Hot in the house yesterday A/C F/T Satis.

Sold the small cage yesterday and erected the large one. A medium dog bed fitted perfectly.

Last night, while partaking of Indian, Henry spread the contents of said dog bed far and wide.
Five bagless vacuum cleaner empties later got most of it.

The wedding party have now decided that they want a round the island boat trip. It is BF6. This is the most boring up chucking experience in the world. OK, as he said to me, when you are from Finland the mountains are dramatic, but not from the bottom of a sick bag. Bride still in bed bridegroom on boat. Don't think that this is going to last longer than a recent Royal wedding.

Breakfast in the port then meet our British vagrant.

Am I becoming more observant or are young girls getting more tattoos? What do they think they are going to look like with wrinkled tattoos in 50 years time?

Yes, tattoos on the increase. I know our cleaner has a new huge one down her shoulder and arm but I shut my eyes when I'm in transit on that side of her. Red tattoo ink is carcinogenic in some folk, not generally known.

Women with tattoos are an absolute turn off for me. She can have the best tits and ass on the planet but I'll still go "eeuu yuck!"

I'm not talking about those little ❤️s just above the tush or something, I'm talking about those serious monstrosities reaching around the arms and legs. Couldn't care less about fat ugly slobs but to tattoo a big-boob cute-assed boner that way should be a bloody crime.

Military tattoos on blokes I can understand. The sh!t that young "men" of today plaster themselves with signals to me they're either poofters and/or seriously deranged with the male-compensation syndrome.
