Are items still priced in guineas?
Originally this price was applied to bespoke purchases specifically manufactured on request, a mass produced item was sold in pounds, but shoes or shotguns were in guineas, the pound going to the merchant and the shilling to the apprentice that made the item.
I haven't seen this used for quite some time, maybe it can be brought back into use when we go back to shillings and pence after Brexit.

At places like Tattersalls in Newmarket thoroughbred horses are still sold in guineas.

Don't know about anywhere else, though.

One trailerful (two industrial wheelbarrows full) of logs, loaded, brought home and stacked down the side of the garage. Phew !
The log merchant's yard is guarded by two extremely enthusiastic and large dogs. One is always called Tom and the other isn't. I was as usual 'attacked' because they never forget last year I brought biscuits. No biscuits today so they sat on my feet until they'd had their ears rubbed enough, which is a lot, leaning against me and grunting. Lovely intelligent dogs. Make collecting logs a pleasure.

Good marketing can sell any kind of SH!T.
Was thinking perhaps a good slop of freshly dropped guano mixed with a certain Middle Eastern manufactured moonshine would make for a good snakeoil bottle of Ex-Ascot’s Miracle Tonic Waters!

Some country auctions (in Yorkshire and Rutland at least) were still done in guineas, especially antiques. This typically meant the seller got each pound and the auctioneer got each shilling.

Ex-Ascot - here is a possible reason for your lack of rain/water - it's all gone east.

Interesting stuff Ricardian.

Hello Sunday.
A change in the weather again. Breezy this morning: 240 at 24 kts. Forecast gusts later of 38 kt.
The inevitable showery rain is also on it's way.

I can remember furniture and carpets being sold in guineas. That died out after decimalisation in 1971.

Bacon and eggs walloped down for breakfast and washed down with a goodly draught of Early Grey tea.
Now to think what to do with the chicken I bought yesterday for Sunday lunch. Fancy something a bit spicey.

It's a strange world.....

Good morning folks. Yes we know Ricardian, very unfair. Anyway, a great day, 16 mm of rain overnight, cold overcast and damp. The lagoon is back up to the level it was about 6 weeks ago which is very low but encouraging. The trouble is very little rain forecast for the next week. The next door neighbour 'Dutch RSPCA save the world's animals' wants us to go to the chief with her to complain about the lack of care for the dying cattle here. When in Africa and all that. Anyway have already spoken to him and we want a nice little letter from him in a couple of years time for our permanent residency. Not going to be nagging expats.

Garden a mess but perking up. I may try to plants some butternut squash seeds this week. Well, order them to be planted but still the same.

Where did the day go?

#12950 Post by John Hill » Sun Dec 08, 2019 7:32 am

Sunday, but where did today go?

Gym session at 0730 to start the day, home at nine for a slice of toast and catch up on the telly.

Shower etc then 'tidy' clothes on to visit the money shrine (ATM). Blessed with the necessary foldings for the week.

Went to Bunnings, an Aus big box store and bought a pet's cooling pad to cool LOVML's feet at night.

Next stop with foldings in pocket a visit to the supermarket but had second thoughts when the car park was totally full.

You see we have had some problems here in the last few days, a 12 hour thunderstorm followed by torrential rain. The only north south road on the west side of the mountains has been cut by slips and flooding while on the east side the mighty Rangitata river has flooded SH1 and the only other bridge (closer to the mountains) is closed. Basically the South Island of NZ is split right through the middle! Helicopters are quite busy

Our town is filled with refugees and will be for a few days.

Came home, thought about mowing the lawn but had a SCAN (senior citizens afternoon nap) instead. Salmon omelette for dinner and turned the TV on, Al Jazeera mostly.

Evening skies are tinged with the smoke from across the Tasman Sea (2000kms or so).
Been in data comm since we formed the bits individually with a Morse key.

Noticed the other day on returning from a walk that Myf has taken to standing in her water bowl - one front foot at a time. Thought most odd.

Cold and sunny in N E Iberia. Pools of fog in depressions down below, soon be blasted away when the sun rises.
Sounds of a Pilatus Porter spinning up way across the marshes. First sky divers of the day will be lifting off from the dropzone in Empuriabrava in a few minutes.

Afternoon. 1555L here in Sh!tville China.

Bloody turned cold suddenly in this dump. Currently 19C but it hasn’t deterred the Unwashed from further trashination activity.

Yes indeed very cold at your digs Sah. The forecast of CB is now 1000 feet lower in cloud base and the basis of your +RA (XXRA in the old money). Wouldn’t put much faith in PROB30s.

Good to see you wolfing down England’s finest Ibbie my boy. A good fish n chip dinna from the shop wrapped in The Times would cap it off nicely! 😋

Meantime the Slasherdigs continues dry and cool - but not cold. Ap got back last night from BKK and saw the biggest bloody snake in her life down there at her mate’s place on her way to work from the pub.

Morning all.

Cold with a heavy dew on the campo this morning. Just 8c, but blue sky and sun.

Slash, you has me and hf confused. I am just having my bacon and sausage washed down with black coffee.
I does not do milk in any hot drinks.

For those of you who remember TbF and his missus from TOP and here in the early days, her mother passed away in the early hours of yesterday. She was in her mid 90s.

What's odd about that? It means get me a paddling pool.

Morning world,
Wall to wall blue but cool, just passing 12c from a low of 9.
Same very heavy dew, all is soaked further proving that dogs and white tiles do not mix.

I misfired the ball this morning and it is on the roof or in the gutter. Henry is sulking, likes to chase a ball does Henry.

Ritual lunch naturally on Sunday and I hear muttering about the garden much of which involves lifting. Cue Wod.

That's the day sorted then.

Must sort a tactical evening to go to the lights in Ma Lager city, a new display this year which is reputed to be better than ever.

Nice day on the Humber,8C already. Last nights gale has blown all of the leaves off Mrs 1DC's plastic grass, can't see where they went. Had a successful dinner party last night but then spent the night in bed suffering from cramp after standing all day, never used to be like this!
Have got to escort herself into town so she can buy up all the little glittery things and bed socks et al which she uses to pack Oz daughters Christmas parcel, which has to be posted tomorrow. Expecting to get a bacon sandwich out of the chore..

Don't mention Christmas shopping. Crowded shops trying to buy family and friends something when they have everything. In the earlier days wondering where the money was going to come from. Christmas bloody noise in every shop. Haven't done Christmas for 20 years. Bliss. Had to go into Woolworths the other day to get the car keys from Madam and saw a Christmas tree. No para medics here of course but I came around after they had dragged me outside into the fresh 40 degree air away from the offending item. Will not do that again.

Capt, you missed off the TAF the PROB 30 TEMPO JBN. Actually more like 60 on a Sunday. And, I do not think it is a NR. Son of a S.A. friend playing his electric guitar.

With the recent rains two flowers have popped up in the garden. No idea where they came from or what they are. I would guess some sort of desert crocus.
