Just a slight change in subject. Well... it has finally happened!

Way back in 1992 I did a very stoopid thing! [-X I had a prang and, amongst quite a few other things, managed to sustain (The Medical term herewith) ''...an unstable compression fracture of the first lumbar vertebrae.." :-q

I was warned by the Townsville based Surgeon who put me back together that whilst I would always be in pain, sometimes severely so, I would still be relatively 'functional' and capable of leading a relatively normal life. Until one day.....

And that one day things would start to deteriorate and various extra ailments would appear and that I would find life increasingly 'difficult.'

Yes.... that day has arrived! :(( Over the last few weeks I have found that in the mornings, getting out of bed requires a lot of effort (No, Slasher! Not in your way either! :D ) and that for the first 15 minutes or so I have a severe limp in my starboard leg, seemingly caused by the Sciatic nerve giving me absolute buggery until everything loosens up! Thereafter for the remainder of the day I can shuffle about reasonably so but with the occasional use of some pain relief.

To ease the problem of the morning I now have next to the bed....a walking stick!!

The following is with apologies to Lewis Carrol;

''You are old Father Baum, the young Man said
and your hair has gone rather white....." :(

Morning all,
Not in double figures yet, 9c
overcast but the wind seems to have gone for now.

SM was 8 hours at the Hospital yesterday, she thinks some progress was made.
Need to join the other Spain dwellers and source some wood. Up to yet have been using last years leftovers.

Nothing planned.

Had one for ages, don't knock 'em.

SM found me a nice one.
There was a guy near where we lived who made them. With interesting handles/knobs.
SM saw one with what she took to be an RAF uniform brass button set in the knob. It actually is a Rhodesian Air Force button, but I like it. Its different!.

No wonder a dong is sometimes referred to as a pink bayonet!

What is it about "ten metre wave height, stay away from the coast" that people don't understand ? Girona old city is currently a hairsbreadth away from being flooded and the River Onya is still rising.

Pinky, back end of last year I thought I was wheelchair bound. Walking was very difficult and a stick necessary. This one is 4 ft 6 with a brass ferrule ideal for bayonetting though the knob on the other end would work too.

Anyway, after lots of glucosamine I can now walk well. But, like you, getting up is the problem. After getting up or rising from an arm chair or car I do my Douglas Bader impression. Stand up, straighten legs, walk off stuff legged until things loosen up.

1C!, Oh I wish!, 24c here at 20:15 local!

My 'Beach Car' has a radiator with a 6in split in it and a ruptured timing cover seal.....won't be cheap to replace the radiator, and will replace the timing belt and all the seals at the same time whilst that part is pulled apart. New Timing belt also not cheap...should be all good for another 200 000km after that...

Honest John would also recommend a water pump change (I think).

I am letting my 15 year old Merc go. Last year most of the front suspension was changed ££££. Then November we noticed a problem with the rea r suspension, then a couple of weeks ago we realised it was a leak in the air suspension. The cost again would be ££££ and the car is only worth £££.

It will need 4 new tyres this year too. It is a pre-season blue diesel, but the repair bills will equate to half a years payments on a new car. The radio works when it wants to. Sometimes it even starts up when it is in the garage. The new car will also use 50% less fuel and cost a third of the tax. Downside is the insurance costs will double.

Time to change.

I have a muscle wasting disease and a walking stick comes in handy now and again, the consultant suggested i wear chukka boots instead of shoes as they would give a bit more strength to my ankles. He is right they are a great help in reducing my limp..

About 30 years ago we lived in Cayton (Scarborough) and the late Mrs R had lots of back problems - probably a result of being a WRAC PTI in her youth! It had reached the stage where the GP recommended an operation with a 50/50 chance of ending up in a wheelchair. This spurred us to ask around and a friend recommended a local osteopath. In my books they were akin to soothsayers & tarot card readers but Mrs R was determined to give it a go. Being very independently minded she set off one dark winter's evening with her two walking sticks and took a taxi to the osteopath whose "office" was the front room of a council house about 7 miles away. One hour later she walked out of the osteopath's office with the walking sticks under her arm and caught a bus back home. She went back for two more appointments after which the osteopath said don't come again unless you get severe twinges.
Skip forwards another 15 years or so and we had moved back to Scarborough after 10 years in Cheltenham. We bought a 4-bedroom ex-council house and our neighbour informed us that the previous occupants had been an osteopath & his wife - yes, the self-same house that Mrs R had visited.

This morning I delivered my 100th calf this month. :-bd :YMPARTY:

100 births attended/assisted; 100 live births achieved. Time for an early lunch and a very early attention to the birth canal of a bottla 30 year old Macallan, methinks.

T'morra: a spot of rough shooting in the forenoon; lunch will be some nearly time-expired frozen pheasant.

For some reason, my patch is overrun with partridge this year. Weird. Need to cull the stupid ones. Wish we could do that with the SNumPties of the Pigmy Parliament.

Sorry to hear of your trials and tribulations Pinky. Can one ask as to whether you have availed yourself of a good Chiropractor?

I had a real bad time with my lower back some thirty years ago. Only able to walk hunched up and with a stick. Managed to get an audience with a Chiro in Sydney. Like this guy's patient list included the top echelons of Sydney society. Cost a bomb, but four appointments, and have never looked back. The guy had something that would equate to a medieval rack that he strapped me into and then manipulated my spine. Wasn't gentle with it either. First appointment I hobbled in, and walked out upright with a smile.

Problem with "surgeons/back specialists" is that they examine x-rays with a microscope trying to find any minor blemish on which to hang the blame for problems. Whereas a good Chiro looks at the way it all hangs together, and if it looks "wrong" will manipulate joints, etc. until they look right, and invariably they are able to fix it.

Sixty years ago, when BiL worked down pit, they had a "Bone Bender" known to all, who would call around whenever anyone had back problems. Chiros/BB's have a long and distinguished presence in the coal mining communities of the Midlands.

I need to return to the discussions of Australian forest fires: Mrs RiS asked how come Australia didn't ask any serious international assistance to fight the fires either in equipment or staff. When there are fires around the Med countries exchange fire-fighting capabilities where there is a larger need. Did Australia asked for resources around?
