I remember when the weapon of choice for street fights was the cut-throat razor.

Did quite a lot of cruising on the lagoon over the weekend. Good to have it back. A few other boats around but nothing disruptive. Folk are complaining about lack of fish. We have catfish (barbel) so the fish eagles are happy and many small ones for the kingfishers etc.
Those barbel are incredible creatures. When I lived in the Transvaal, in dry summers I would see them wriggling from pond to pond in search of a new environment in which to swim. I saw one angler land an 8 3 foot barbel at the Vaal dam and that isn't just a damned fishy tale! ;)))
Barbel and Catfish are 2 different species.Google it. :-bd

You are right but they are known as Barbel by ignorant Saffers, like me... ;)))

There's lots of Turkish barbers springing up all over our town. I went to the barber I usually go to only to find it had a new proprietor. I was chatting to him about the number of Turkish barbers in town and he said rather pointedly that he wasn't Turkish, he is a Kurd and used words which I can only assume were not complimentary to his business rivals!! I stayed quiet after that, especially when he was wielding the cut-throat razor. Potential for interesting times ahead in our town methinks.
Likewise in my area. One has even appeared in the small village of Oundle not far from me and is open on Sundays! The story I was told by my own barber and I have no other source for this, is that because Turkey is not a member of the EU, Turks (Kurds), can come and live in the UK provided they invest in a business. They seem to have decided that hairdressing is the way to go. (Much less frenetic and messy than car-washing I suppose), and this is why they are popping up all over the place. He also mentioned that the local council has forbidden them from using the 'ear candling' treatment.

In our nearby town that had three 'English' barbers there are now five English and two Turkish - and I thought that they weren't cutting hair any longer.

Apart from being painful what does the ear candle treatment achieve?
Lovely day on the Humber and Mrs 1DC has gone to hit the little white ball so I have four hours of peace and quiet..

Clearly a cut throat, competitive, business...

One English and 1 Turkish barber in town.

Use the English blokes as I know most of them from the pub.

Strange idea. Sounds somewhat perverse... =))

Allegedly, it gets rid of the hair in and around your ears. A few years ago, I went to a consultant audiologist (because I suffer from various problems with my ears) and I mentioned it in passing. He advised me under no circumstances to allow this, since he reckoned (and I'm sure he was right), that it does more harm than good.

Indeed, and nothing like having hot wax accidentally poured over the pink purity of one's shell like ear and lobe! :))

Ah, no. My candelling was nothing to do with hair cutting. More a form of meditation. Most relaxing.

When I was a Catman in Oman, with Battmen who were Brit Army guys of a non-Scottish regiment, I once asked why so many (I reckon about three-quarters) were Scottish.

The SNCO replied, with a glint in his eye, "Cuz wurr harrd basturts, Surr".

He was right.

Nice sunset over the lagoon. Do not know why but all the burds are being bloody noisy. Had sundowners with feet in pool. Only 32° OAT so too cold to actually get in.

Don't really like the M.E. UP but Oman is OK. Tried to get a job on their Royal Flight but no vacancy.

Ex-A, in the V-Force copilots became captains or didn't. If they didn't cut it in the 60s (many different reasons) they got some very rare postings. One became a ground FAC. But one, Jules Brett, got a tour with the British Antarctic Survey. As tourex (12 months) approached he applied to extend only to be told his predecessor would replace him. He immediately applied for the following tour.

What to do for 12 months? He applied for Oman Air Force loan service. He visited the sqn driving a brand new Bristol.
