Isobar was the proper name of air pressure measurement before the bloody candy-ass sounding Hectopascal was forced upon us. The units are exactly the same FFS. 🙄

I mean who really prefers saying hectopascallic iso isobaric?

Arguable that "a rose by any other name would smell as sweet", in that barometric pressure is read in Imperial inches in my house, because that's how my venerable (and inherited) instrument displays it on the analogue dial face. Same thing being measured, and a rather nice daily habit is to gently tap it to overcome "stiction" in its workings ... :)

Orbit - thing done to a marble rather than cubit.

(Actually I meant to say above that isobar was a line of equal baro press measurement. Got me millis and isos mixed up).

Gendarmes - polite name for members of the French police. The hoi polloi call them Les Flics apparently, which sounds OK to me, unless there's some offensive undercurrent of meaning to the term in Ffrog circles ...

Stone the crows! A slangy exclamation in Ozspeak to indicate shock disbelief or surprise. Akin to “well f**k me dead!”

Buggered if I know the origin of it or why crows should be stoned in that event. Maybe one of ‘em said Jehovah in the past.
