Acumen - the ability to make good judgements and take quick decisions. An invaluable ability to possess in so many trades, jobs, and professions. :)

ENTROPY a term used in thermo-dynamics but which could also apply to the (lack of) governance in the UK. The exact opposite of acumen as described above.

Pyramid - a very large stone structure with square base and sloping sides that meet in a point at the top. The two largest at Giza were once clad in white limestone to give smooth surfaces, but most of this has been stolen for other projects over the millennia. The lower one (Chephren's) still has some left in place on the upper levels. Some folk will nick anything, even from one of the famed "7 Wonders of the World" ... 8-|

When Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries, much of the stone was used for local housing.

That's why so many of them are ruins today.

Idea - the origin of very useful items like paperclips or drawing pins, for example. Why didn't I think of these?

Iconoclast - a person who attacks established customs and values. A dignified - sounding word for someone who's simply a pain in the bum ... :-q

Strive - try very hard to do or achieve something - which has a hint of desperation about it ... #:-S

VENAL I once met a French woman in the foyer of a hotel who described herself as 'venal'. It's just a euphemism for whore.

Allege - claim that someone has done something illegal or wrong. A magic word much used by folk who habitually "sail close to the wind" in matters relating to civil or criminal law, and are fearful of being sued or charged with an offence, unless they have included the word somewhere. Lawyers generally approve of its use, as it's good for obfuscation (and fees).

Usual - customary, habitual, much used in pubs and bars as verbal shorthand for an often-ordered tipple.

Unthinkable - too unlikely or unpleasant to be considered a possibility. Recent political and criminal developments have rendered that traditional definition outdated, I feel. Nothing nowadays seems to have the power to shock ... :(

Leonine - like a lion. A major regret of mine in 1989 was to have passed close to George Adamson's lion reserve at Kora, Kenya, without trying to meet him. The time and money considerations of our inspection survey of radio stations made it a "No-No" indulgence, but had we known that later he would bravely meet his end there, we would have been bolder and risked him telling us to clear off ...
