Gorinchem - a town in the south of Holland where I stayed while on an engineering job in 1972. I had no problem with the location, the very comfortable hotel booked for my stay, or the pleasant Dutch residents (I quite like the Netherlands). But I did have difficulty trying to pronounce the name of the town, which sounds in the throaty local language as if the speaker is about to throw up, similar to a cat coughing up a fur ball. Despite practice, I never got it right. But at least it gave the hotel staff a good laugh. :ymblushing:

The rabble - ordinary people, as referred to by some "high and mighty" individuals. Or even as hoi polloi, by some with a bit more edumification, perhaps.

Levies - military units raised by conscription, thereby giving them something to moan about.

Estaminet - French cafe that serves alcohol, very popular with levies (such as during WW1) where they have somewhere comfortable to moan about things.

ETCHED upon my memory, one of the most enjoyable meals I've ever had was in a restaurant near Trafalgar Square called L'Estaminet, and I didn't know what the word meant,

Eddies - swirling movements of a liquid or gas, which interested Leonardo da Vinci when he watched the water eddies around bridge piers, and sketched them. He had the keen enquiring mind of a polymath, in addition to his considerable artistic talent. Maybe if he hadn't spent so much time painting, he might have developed a theory of hydrodynamics. ;)))

Lysistrata - an ancient Greek comedy play about wives withholding marital privileges to get what they want.

This link made me laugh, with more than a couple of double entendres - well worth a quick look ...

With the ever-helpful London A-Z street map in mind, I can't help wondering if the Greeks have produced an equivalent Alpha to Omega map for Athens? ;)))
