Icarus is the son of the master craftsman Daedalus. The main story told about Icarus is his attempt to escape from Crete by means of wings that his father constructed from feathers and wax.

Use of low melting-point wax to secure those feathers as flight surfaces was always likely to end in tears, and factoring in the solar heating aspects of high altitude test flying made structural failure almost inevitable. Notwithstanding the close family connection, I think Icarus should have seriously considered a possible Health & Safety prosecution of his dad Daedalus, on grounds of inappropriate selection of materials and construction techniques ... 8-|

Sex - well, the average bloke thinks about it a lot. I'm surprised it doesn't appear here more often :))

Or, (a choice), seclusion - a way to keep oneself away from such thoughts and attempt some purity of mind and body.

Veranda - a roofed structure with an open front along the outside of a house. I like verandas, especially in the sunny African climate, like this one featured in an interesting link:-

https://hookedonhouses.net/2010/03/22/k ... of-africa/

(I visited her real house, the Danish-owned museum, while I was in the area inspecting radio beacons on top of the Ngong Hills. The real house was so beautifully copied for the filming, as shown in this link, that I was fooled into thinking I was in the settings where Robert Redford and Meryl Streep acted the scenes. Aah, "the magic of the movies"... ;))) )

Lectures - architecture undergrads from an 'elite' faculty were obliged to attend a couple of terms of our advanced structural analysis lectures. This was intended to give them an insight into the problems that impractical architectural flights of fancy could cause. The extent of their interest in the subject can be gauged from the fact that they occasionally passed a lighted road lamp around the theatre, and threw flaming paper aeroplanes, behind the lecturer's back. Some of the current batch of monstrous buildings in London don't surprise me at all ... 8-|

Yea I say unto you. If you walk through the alleys in the shadows of Bangkok, one had better fear evil as it will come up and bite one in the arse if one is not bloody careful.

Here endeth the lesson....🙏

RMI - radio magnetic indicator. In modern aircraft it's basically an ADF needle with a compass card slaved to an IRS or magnetic database in the PFM box.

Minestrone - a soup with vegetables and bits of pasta, which I have always called "leftovers soup" because I suspect that is what it sometimes comprises. Nothing wrong with being thrifty with leftover food ingredients however. I quite like it, and also the similarly produced "Bubble and Squeak" potato/cabbage/onions mixture for adding to a breakfast fry-up.
