Eraser - an object used to remove or alter writing or markings on surfaces; more widely known as a rubber outside the USA. Can you guess why the Americans won't call it a rubber, kiddies? Yes, that's right, it's because we're "Two countries divided by a common language", of course ... ;)))

Intemperate - lacking self-control. An annoying tendency of the media is to report that named individuals are "fighting" conditions such as alcoholism, drug addiction, obesity, aggressive anger bouts, ruinous gambling habits, etc. When the whole point in most cases is that they are actually doing the exact opposite to combatting their feeble willpower, by indulging it at every opportunity with a "what the hell" attitude. Bah!!

Stretches the imagination that for the relatively modest sum of £2 billion of taxpayers' money, this proposed "all-singing-all-dancing" Tempest can be developed mainly by the UK and its "Team Tempest" consortium, without Lockheed Martin and their F-35 being involved. Or have I simply had a bad dream after a cheese supper? I sense another TSR2 fiasco looming ... :-?

Austral - of or from the south. From the Latin auster, (the south wind). Hey, is that how Australia got its name?

In an ontological mood, a chronic worrier wonders if they're really here at all, and if they are, whether they ought to be or not ... :-\

An alternative name for an ottoman is a pouffe, which not surprisingly comes from France.

Erotica - in the rather staid 1950s there wasn't much of this available in our school library, but a liberal-minded old boy had gifted "The Good Soldier Schweik", by the Czech author Jaroslav Hasek, to the shelves. Where word of mouth amongst our hordes of adolescent boys recommended it as being very spicy in parts - with page corners helpfully turned down at the "good" bits. Years passed before I discovered that it's a classic satirical black comedy, and the most translated Czech novel worldwide! ;)))

Campanile - a bell tower. This one collapsed in 1902 and was rebuilt. It's now beginning to lean and crack, and work is in progress to stop it falling down again. It's still open to climb and enjoy the view of Venice. Any volunteers? :-s ;)))

Etch A Sketch - one of those "must have" toys for several generations of children, like Lego or Barbie - and blessedly didn't need batteries! I think there's still one in the loft. The cable and pulleys operating system was surprisingly complex, as some parents discovered when diddums managed to break it ...
