Ee-by-Gum - a good saying from oop North and also the official kennel name of a dog back in the 1980s. He had a brother called Ecki Thump, too.

Utilitarianism - the doctrine promoted by Jeremy Bentham, that the right course of action is the one that provides the greatest happiness of the greatest number of people. He was a very odd bod indeed, who had himself dissected after his death, then stuffed with hay, clad in his usual clothes, and displayed publicly in a glass-fronted cabinet. Not a pretty sight, and hardly the source of much happiness for those who have seen him ... weird! :(

Lectures - Back in my 'uni' days, we had three one-hour lectures every morning, Monday to Friday, with each afternoon devoted to three-hour sessions in the college labs. We didn't complain that we weren't getting "value for money" for our tuition fees, from just a pathetic handful of lectures/week and little else. Wait a minute, we didn't have to pay any tuition fees at all, did we? So maybe those present-day students who are complaining, with thousands of pounds of debt accumulating, actually have a valid point? :-?

Bridge over the River Usk, in Wales. The Taffys know how to build bridges that last, though this one is a bit odd, with 12 arch spans on the upstream side, and 13 on the downstream side. The presence of a pub at the North end is rumoured to have something to do with the mason's confusion in reading the plans ... ;)))

Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, where Paleoanthropologists like the Leakeys reckoned that DIY was born, based on the home-made tools found just lying around.

Nebuchadnezzar, a very big (15 litres) bottle of Champagne. You might expect the bubbly in it to be cheaper per litre, if the common pricing practice for jumbo-sized items in supermarkets applied. You would be sadly wrong! :-o

Archibald Leach, better known as Cary Grant. He and Peter Sellers both starred in films with Sophia Loren, and both of them supposedly fancied her as a result. I would guess that Grant was more likely to succeed than Sellers, but who knows? :-?

Learn Greek in 25 years by Brian Church is really funny and sort of helpful if you are actually trying to learn Greek. :)
