Tensiometer - an instrument for direct measurement of the tension in cables, guy ropes, hawsers, etc., where the value actually matters on safety grounds. For musical instruments like pianos, harps, guitars, violins, etc., the string tensions are assessed indirectly, by tuning the sounds made by their lateral vibrations.
