Re: Rant of the Day v2.
A fiendish new torment from IKEA. To those of us used to years of pre drilled holes, one opens a box (tearing off one nails in the process) to find a pristine piece of melamile-covered wood (other than two hinge holes, unused in this case, so with plastic infills) and a metal template with holes A and B and squiggle squiggle and instructions where to make a hole into which a screw will later be inserted. Then turn the template over, and/or end-for-end, and possibly thru dimension n and n+11, and drill again. It all worked. Sort of.

Re: Rant of the Day v2.
This is because of the high end kitchen market. Lots of posh kitchen designers used to cheat and use Ikea base cabinets, with fancy doors and handles. However, the pre-drilled holes were the giveaway. So, to keep the market (and push up their prices), no pre-drilled holes.
Re: Rant of the Day v2.
Don't the holes come in a separate packet?

Yes, but that's an extra.
They are made in Blackburn, Lancashire. The daily output is enough to fill the Albert Hall.

When I was first married I did a fair number of MFI constructions which were a nightmare. Sounds as if IKEA has gone down to those depths. Shame because I believe they were very good. Useless information for most but there is an IKEA at ATH. Buy and fly.

Mrs 1DC and Oz daughter got me into one in Melbourne once, bloody terrifying you couldn't get out of it. Never done it again. I have put something together from there that went in daughters kitchen, it looked ok and there weren't any bits left over!

There are supposed to be bits left over - for fixing it soon after!

Once you understand the principles of their store layouts, you understand why Churchill said "When going through Hell, keep going".

The IKEA in Gateshead (had) 'wormholes' that connected the backs of certain areas, allowing one to cut out sections of the route - but they were heavily disguised and 'private' - not for the public use of.
I used them when wanting to fast-forward to the restaurant without 'shopping' .

Re: Rant of the Day v2.
Sorry to have to disagree with most posters about IKEA quality. We have two 'dresser' type units that were purchased in the Kuwait store in 1986 that I have disassembled and reassembled several times for shipping to and from overseas locations. Whilst they may not now be the height of fashion, if they ever were, they perform a useful function as bookcases and storage in my home office.
Maybe quality has slipped in recent years but 35 years ago it was quite acceptable.

Whilst posted to Denmark in the early 1980s, we acquired various IKEA items, including bunk beds.
These are still in daily use today by my grandchildren.

No local IKEA, tho' have used it in the past, but have "constructed' much from a local lookalike, only problem so far was an instruction sheet only printed in Chinese !
Fortunately it had pictures and was fairly self-evident.

In my photography & other equipment I use quite a few rechargeable AA batteries. was told recently by one who should know, that the best quality brand are available at lower cost under Ikea's brand.

Yes, their batteries are, or perhaps WERE, made by the same German firm that made submarine batteries during WWII. Although they have ways of making me talk, I have forgotten the name.

Re: Rant of the Day v2.
I used Ikea batteries for a long time, and they were as long lasting as the best and cheaper. I used to do battery energy comparisons with my physics classes, so it was a fact.
I now find any of the 10 year shelf life batteries to be great, which is just as well since I'm no longer near an Ikea. My Ikea rechargeables are still going strong, but I think they recently stopped doing them.
