Re: Rant of the Day v2.
Two calls today from young ladies asking if I had an accident in the past few years. Told the first I had to have my legs amputated after the first accident so I was legless, and had my arms removed after the second so I was legless and 'armless. Waste of breath as no humour where she came from. Told the second caller to 'wait a minute' in Arabic (actually said that old ATC holder 'stand by one') and she hung up on me. Both now on my blocklist.

Re: Rant of the Day v2.
Coriolis ? Apply the appropriate weight shift to the right foot, corrected for Latitude...........my sandal blowouts have always been the left one too. Buggered if I can figure out why.
Apparently the Trans-Siberian Railway always de-rails to the North, for the same reason, as our 1950's Astro Navigation instructor once told us.
Re: Rant of the Day v2.
When 'marching', one always starts 'by the left' - so, therefore, the left foot (and shoe/boot/footwear) gets more wear.

The chirality of misfortune perhaps, as opposed to being **** by the fickle finger of fate or Coriolis's cursed curve!ExSp33db1rd wrote: ↑Wed Jan 23, 2019 9:28 pmCoriolis ? Do we that were trained in this manner, still do that?
I've never thought about it.
When I climb stairs I start with the left leg, this is because it is the best knee! The right one is buggered.

Re: Rant of the Day v2.
The old African charlatan's trick on the equator of showing water going down a plug hole one way or the other depending on latitude north or south of the line, as it were, being complete bull of course, because the forces associated with swirling water on such a small scale being so small that that the slightest contrary force will overcome them, thus aiding the shyster and his sleight of hand!
Still even on relatively small scales, of a mile or less, Coriolis holds sway, or should that be swirl. vide the plethora of tornados from 50 foot across all the way to 2 mile of more across that follow the law, and yet there are exceptions at that scale too.. vide.

Do it every day Ian. Step onto the treadmill and say to myself "Byyy the left qqqquick march". If I didn't would just stand there wondering what to do.

Re: Rant of the Day v2.
Caco, re your #726, I vaguely remember reading of an experiment being conducted by (I think) Princeton Uni, where they very precisely machined and levelled a large trough with drain, set up in temperature-controlled closed rooms in various parts of the world, to demonstrate Coriolis effect. Otherwise, as you say, the effects are negligible on a small scale.

Isn't that an order to take one's dressing from the left and not begin on the left foot?

Re: Rant of the Day v2.
Correct Slasher. Whilst G-CPTN was inferring that one started off on the left foot. That is not so. Played the Air Force march, mumbled the phrase "Byyy the left qqqquick march" and took off on my right foot. Which was so deeply embedded in my psyche as to be an automatic reaction.

Re: Rant of the Day v2.
As this is a rant thread, I feel entitled to point out that while G-CPTN may have implied something, only you can infer what G-CPTN said. Here endeth the lesson.
Re: Rant of the Day v2.
Sorry Mag, need to look at subject in context. Discussion related to Ian16th always wearing out left foot of his sandals first, or similar. G-CPTN inferred this to be from air force days when one always took off left foot first when marching from the phrase "By the left...." .

Errant left sandal now is clamped for the night, after liberal application of Bostik clear adhesive.
Tomorrow, I may have a spare pair of sandals.Cynicism improves with age

I do hope you wear them with socks Ian, to show your ethnicity.

We have something like that, although I keep it switched off too. Has other fancy functions built in as well. I wouldn't have paid for it, but it came with the house when we bought it.Slasher wrote: ↑Wed Jan 23, 2019 5:59 pmI once had a fancy Jap dunny that had an auto-heated seat when the sensed temp of it went below 15C.
Great idea on paper but in practice the psychological feeling that some other bastard had just taken a crap was too much. I had it permanently switched off no matter how cold the perch got in Winter.

Re: Rant of the Day v2.
The South African author, sometime murderer and all round commentator on the Bushveld, natives, and other aspects of SA life, Herman Charles Bosman, had many trenchant ways of spotting an Englishman, and as you imply Alison, only an Englishman would wear socks with his velskoene and, indeed, only an Englishman would wear sandals, let alone socks with them.
The Rhodesians took the vellie and lack of socks to new heights as is so humorously demonstrated here...

Re: Rant of the Day v2.
That's correct Cap'n Slasher. Occasionally the DI would throw in a "By the right" but you would still step off on the left foot.
At least that's something I learnt at Hereford.
