Had a reasonably busy day. Visited dottir and granddottir, took latter for a walk in a local park so I could stun swans, geese, ducks, herons, water hens &c with lumps of stale bread, met my brother for a couple of lunchtime pints, and am now making chicken stock for soups. SWMBO has gone off to a nearby shopping centre with aforementioned offspring leaving me in peace to listen to SRV at high volume.

My post 636: why was this pathetic example of a human being killed ? Posting pictures of himself on social media grinning and holding fistfuls of large denomination notes, or making insulting signs to three members of a rival drug distribution gang driving past....whatever, as family and friends rush in to say, "he never did nuffink wrong", did he. When they won't face up to what their offspring are up to at night, there's no hope for them. I say 'they' but I mean 'she' as inevitably he did not have a father...

Just because the Yanks can't get dates right the civilised world should at least make an attempt to.

It's not just the USAmericans that have a stupid illogical way of writing dates. Many ZA government departments do it. To me, 9/11 is 09NOV. And 12/09/11 is just plain bloody confusing as it is (I think) 09NOV2012, but could be 12SEP2011. Ergo, I always write dates as in 15JAN19. For those who can't understand English and don't know JAN FEB MAR etc, e.g. the Frogs, step off the planet, it will carry on revolving without you.

Still do. except I don't add the "20" upfront. Thus today (Oz time) 190116. Still occasionally refer to spreadsheets dated 970215 and earlier, and letters similar.

You'd want more than that unless there's also an index. If you've got a bunch of files from six months ago and the only clue to content is the file name, then it helps to have a hint as to the content to save you opening each one in turn until you find the correct one.

The ISO-8601 date format is quite sensible. YYYY-MM-DD is unambiguous and it's easy for a computer to sort it into date order, unlike any of the other formats. I'ts the one I default to.

I did always wonder why, on their I-94W forms, the US asked for date in DD-MM-YY format, unless they just decided that as the rest of the world was going ot write it that way anyway, they might as well just ask for it in that format. Makes way more sense than the MM-DD-YY, which is akin to writing "one hundred and twenty-three" as 213.

My being married to an American, neither of whom can change the ingrained habits of a lifetime, even tho' Mrs ExS agrees that the USA system of dates is illogical, makes for an interesting life . Anyhow ... it comes in useful when I have to explain why I have not acknowledged important anniversaries ! Oh ! I thought you meant October, not July ? ( or whatever ) So not all is lost.

Being born on the 11th September, I always get a funny look from the TSA when I enter the USA, like ... are you trying to be funny ?

Ok for use on one's personal spreadsheet but inappropriate for use as a unique key on multiuser, multiple time zone, based database systems where key collisions could occur. Better to use an encrypted hashing algorithm, preferably using SHA 256 or even 512 in such cases.

I didn't know that, but I've only spent 3 days in French speaking Switzerland, a 'sales conference' in Montreux, that passed in an alcoholic haze.

German: "vier und zwanzig" = 24.
Time, "halb acht" or half eight is 07:30, not half past eight.

Catalan: special system for telling time, no word for half so "dos quarts" or two quarters. "Five to eight" in Catalan would be "It is missing five minutes of one quarter before eight" or "......of four quarters before eight'.

One aspect of Catalan language exam is being shown depictions of clockface and having to tell the time. Quickly ! Even Catalans get it wrong.
