Re: Rant of the Day v2.
ian16th point was initially raised by our beloved Capetonian, I notice I was prone to it and gave up.
Re: Rant of the Day v2.
First, issues with cable/internet company. Still have to order new modem. They are sending a $50 gift card for my bitching.
Second, washing machine went TU. Almost as much to repair as I originally paid for it. Not happy with the machine to begin with. Trying to find decent one without all the electronic bells and whistles.
Now, water heater and hot water line issues. Awaiting consult with neighbor (retired builder) for referral for plumber.
What's next?

PP never ask what's next it tempts faith.
When I bought a washing machine the first criterion was to be in the bottom range but not the cheapest - I saw a discount made a model rather affordable. And I leaned towards the one with the fewer programs.

When I was forced to replace a 2 1/2 year old refrigerator last fall there was a shortage due to Covid. Dedicated appliance stores and home improvement stores such as Lowe's and Home Depot had plenty of models on display but very few models were in stock.
The situation with washers seems to be better but I am having trouble finding any that aren't electronically controlled. Seems to be very few lower end models.

Surely running costs could be excessive.

BBC is to bring BBC3 back to broadcast to attract a younger audience. As the papers say, the boat has already sailed. Now people of all ages are used to streaming programmes they want to watch when they want to.
No longer are we tied to the tyranny of the time table.
When I was working random hours I never got in the habit of tuning in for serials. Serving overseas there was no TV. I guess that was true of many others in ON.

When single and living in, to watch TV meant a trog to the NAAFI/Cpl Club. So not treated lightly, especially if it was raining or some such.

My first washing machine lasted me 19 years and was still working when we had to dispose of it due to moving country. The accompanying tumble dryer was only a year or so younger. I had to replace a thermostat on the dryer and a door latch on the washer. Both were clockwork devices, no fancy electronics. The appliances I bought second hand when I moved to the US are both clockwork too. I had to fix the door switch on the dryer a couple of years ago, the tab had broken off so it wouldn't detect the door. I put a bit of heatshrink on it and that works well enough.Rwy in Sight wrote: ↑Wed Mar 03, 2021 7:14 pmPP never ask what's next it tempts faith.

Re: Rant of the Day v2.
It seems there is a fine line between having some elementary gismos and having too much. For instance I really like the delayed-operating function of my machine since it allows me to have freshly washed clothes when I wake up in the morning having used the night tariff. Unfortunately once manufacturers started fancy electronics it was a very slippery paths to add more to make their products more attractive
And here is a rant to remain within the spirit of the thread: how much more expensive it becomes the support of an older appliance - much the same like ink on modern printers very very expensive as the machine ages.

Pontius, absolutely correct. The world has moved on but the BBC are living in the past. Possibly an attempt to justify the licence fee. When I want to see something my first place to visit is the internet. And for accurate comment on current affairs I come here (!)

What we get here is generally news. What we get in the media is often meaningless speculation and regurgitation.
Some are more sceptical than others but we seem to have reasonably balanced international spread of comment.

I agree, as a whole the site lists a little to the right, but leaning a little to the left myself, Ive found that it's not enough to worry about, and disagreements are carried out in a civil manner, unlike some other places.Rwy in Sight wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 9:38 pmI feel we lean a bit to the right but we are happy so who cares
Anyway, it doesn't hurt to hear some conflicting opinions.

Hydromet, sort of what I was trying to say. If I wanted left wing views I would read the Guardian, which I don't. For opposing views I read the Telegraph and it is rare that either echoes opposing views in its pages.
Here it is much akin to a pub table, damp with ale and increasingly vociferous opinion but rarely will you call Jimmy outside.

Sums it up very nicely, PN.
