I miss the good old days when the vanity projects of millionaires and billionaires were to build public libraries, museums and music venues.

Amen to that SIr. Where is Carnegie when you need him? He, or his trust, built that beautiful old library in Canton Cardiff, that kept me sane when I first arrived in Britain.

Flying over St Donat's Castle used to make me wonder about Rosebud as well! The Hearsts had their moments too!

We lived in Brora, Sutherland 1976-82. Carnegie paid for the pipe organ that I played in the kirk. He also paid for the pipe organ in Dornoch Cathedral which I had the privilege of playing at a friend's wedding. Another Carnegie connection was that my deputy in the kirk at Brora was an elderly chap who still received a pension from the Carnegie estate because he had been the "official" organist at Skibo Castle when Carnegie's grandaughter was in residence.

And 'restore' churches.

So many of our 'cathedrals' were rejuvenated in the 1800s.
It's tempting to assume that such buildings are as they were built, however a little research reveals that many are as they are due to 'benefactors' (some of whom were not received kindly).

It seems that something called the reformation was the cause of their decline.

The Temple of the Shaolin Monks in London is leased, and the lease expires next year: Islington Council (who else) are not allowing the lease to be renewed but will demolish the building, and create a site for travellers and gypsies in its place. Needless to say, not only followers of the Shaolin Monks but also locals are up in arms.

And absolutely gorgeous.
Lever began collecting art in the late 19th century, largely to use in advertising for the popular Sunlight Soap brand (manufactured a few minutes' walk from the gallery) that helped to create his fortune. As he grew richer his collections began to expand, his confidence grew as well and he developed a taste for collecting. He mostly collected British art, but he was also fascinated by Chinese art, Roman sculpture and Greek vases, which he had chosen to collect to show styles that had influenced British artists in the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries.

He endowed the gallery to showcase his collection. It is named in memory of his wife Elizabeth Hulme (Lady Lever) who had died in 1913
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_Lever_Art_Gallery

Many industrialists, philanthropists and other wealthy figures gifted collections to their country, but in many ways, it is best that Lever left his objects d'art in the name and memory of his deceased wife Elizabeth, she died in 1913, as there is no whitewashing the subsequent, dark legacy of the Lever company's subsidiary in the Congo!

Huileries du Congo Belge
Huileries du Congo Belge (HCB) was a subsidiary of the soap manufacturing company Lever Brothers, created by William Hesketh Lever, which ran plantations in the Congo for the production of palm oil, using forced labour

And the Victorian "modernisers" such as Sir Gilbert Scott were responsible for a lot of the wholesale scrapping of church interiors. William Morris founded the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings in an effort to minimise the damage

Carrefour had a price reduction on the second packet of dish washer tabs today, so I bought two. Needless to say, at the automated checkout, no reduction.
Carrefour is, of course, French.

Was going to attend to some bits of business and shopping today, needed some information from Inland Revenue Dept., wait-time 38 minutes or talk to a machine, machine-voice wanted information I did not have, contacted accountant for the information, person who could attend to it was in conference till 4pm, gave up, staying home. :))

This is outrageous.

While I haven't bought a Christmas (or Easter, or any other) card for many years, they ought to be available on the shelves. I gave up buying them when they got really expensive and I decided not to contribute to card company profits any more.

Yes, they did get cheaper again, but I'd gotten out of the habit by then and never went back.

Alternatively, you have an extra three years supply, assuming the five you have survive or remain friends. :ymdevil:

Ex-A , I believe that the Happy Holidays thing started in the States, but we buy our cards from our Church, which are obviously religious and don’t line the pockets of the rip off card shops :-bd
When all else fails, read the instructions.

I have decided to celebrate all Holidays of every persuasion, as there is a lack of reason to celebrate on the personal level.
Obviously, I don't send cards as that would only make me broker. [-X
Also, have to buy the wine to use in the celebration of said Holidays. :YMPARTY:
