The BBC are going to withdraw free TV licences for the over-75s unless they are on pension credits. That will mean lots of elderly people will now be subject to the thuggish, threatening letters from TV Licensing.
The BBC conducted a "consultation" last year and 48% voted for no change to TV licensing whilst the other 52% voted for a combination of other options. The BBC has taken that as the majority voted for change - they've obviously based their decision on the mathematics of the EU Election results. Is FPTP now dead in the UK?

With respect, the BBC don't do themselves any favours. Their statement that they need to dispense with the free licence for over-75s in order to cover their costs and avoid closing down some services is somewhat negated by their profligacy with licence-fee payers money in respect of various projects (e.g the new set for 'Eastenders') and the generous salaries paid to numerous 'celebs' and their own staff. Quite how the likes of Gary Lineker justifies a salary of £1.75m (equivalent to 11,326 licences) is beyond me.

The NAO has stated in a report (dated 16 May 2019) :

Reforms the BBC has introduced should mean it is better placed to deliver value for money in its staff pay-bill. While detailed financial information on the pay-bill costs and savings of its reforms exist, we did not see evidence that it put in place sufficient arrangements for the Board’s oversight and challenge of these costs and savings while completing the terms and conditions review. Nor has the BBC estimated the wider financial savings arising from these reforms. This is alongside a lack of regular central oversight of total spend on on-air roles. Without stronger Board oversight and challenge, it will be harder for the BBC to demonstrate that its extensive reforms have achieved value for money.

Perhaps previous advice of 'Cut your coat according to the cloth' have been ignored for too long and the BBC is now finding great big bite marks on its @r$e.

Many (many) years ago I had at least one gold crown fitted by an NHS dentist at no cost to me.
When it gave up the ghost (many years later and a different dentist - not NHS) declined the offer of the gold - which is still in the bathroom cabinet - "Not worth anything".

This happened to me! But fortunately my son is a manufacturing jeweller.

He added it to his 'scrap'. Jewellers collect all of their filings and periodically have it refined.

If you can find a manufacturing jeweller he may buy it.

Just guessing...g). You may keep my prize, which, I reckon, is worth about the same.

Not wanted by jewellers as it's an alloy.

My son used to have his 'scrap' refined.

Gold refineries are rather common in SA

He also had a Gold Licence as trading in gold is rather controlled.

Only got one gold filling. Dentist is a mate, he said the gold was on him.

As my fillings age and need replaced, I'm having amalgam taken out and white resin used to replace them. Looks better and will outlast me. Sorry, rant=free there.

Amalgam for fillings ? Thought that was dropped many years ago. My dentist has used UV-setting resin for eternity.

Amalgam from the '60s, OFSO. I went a very long time with no fillings, but now the 50YO stuff is starting to deteriorate.

Indeed. If done properly dental work can last for ever. Well, if not 'for ever', certainly longer than the rest of the frailty.

Not if you fly fast jets. My fillings would last about 5 years tops, sometimes only two. It was quite easy to measure, and applied to fillings done before and after I joined up, and it wasn't anything to do with diet, Service dentists, or the amalgam used. Since I stopped jetting about, I've only had 2 new ones replaced in 30 years, and one was definitely biting down on a piece of grit. I'm guessing it was the pressure changes.

Fox, I once had tooth ache after a filling, had it redone and a chamber run.

Fox, back in December 2010 I spoke with an Air Force Dentist. He made very clear that the modern technique for feelings does not interfere with flying ie no small packets of air to hurt when pressure change.

Pleased to hear it - I left in 1993 and the big concern then was the air packets. Amend my last to Not if you flew fast jets.

When I joined up in 1974 they re-did all my fillings saying they had to ensure there were no air pockets that could cause problems when flying, I was a ground trade.

I think the problem I had was in the 60s and the tooth pain was relieved with and audible hiss and cabin altitude only 8k.
