Well spotted om, that was a very tough challenge.

for the current one could we possibly have a scale, for example how high that structure is?
Assuming that the gate in the slot is about 6', then it looks to me 30-50 feet high.
...and on the top of a hill outside a well-lit city, which tends to rule out the 'stans', though they are much given to indulgent architecture.

In this case it must be the Pakistan Monument, which I believe is in Islamabad, which I believe is in Pakistan
(I was thinking more of the Central Asian 'stans'). :ymblushing:

OH if correct

Yes it is the Pakistan Monument in Islamabad, found by tango15 and Open House declared.

Excellent guess. Wrong, but still very good. I've never been to Cuba, but wanted to in 1947 when my neighbors came back from Havana.

I took this one after a non-stop flight from Heathrow.

Without checking to see if BA flew to SJO, I'd guess Costa Rica. Their number plates had the same 6 digit format.

We had a lovely holiday there in about 1992, it was our first long distance trip together. The worst part of the trip was flying on bloody Iberia via Santo Domingo and on the way back we had this obese Bavarian next to us, he was so big we couldn't all get our tray tables down. He asked me if my girlfriend (now wife) spoke German and when I said she didn't he started telling me about how he'd 'rented' (he used the verb 'mieten' like renting a car) a 12 year old girl for a week for about $100. I didn't want to be rude to him under the circumstances so just said I didn't want to hear about it.

I thought of Puerto Rico or Republica Dominicana but I don't think they had that 6 digit number plate format.

All very good and reasonable guesses, and none remotely close.

It is the capitol of the country in which it is located. It is NOT a destination I would normally pick to visit, but there were unusual circumstances.
