Am I right in thinking that this is in an area which would not normally be considered as wine-producing, eg somewhere in the UK?
It is not UK. Do we have wine cellars like this in the UK? Dunno. It is an area which has produced wine for centuries. You pay in Euro.

Just going off line for a few hours so two other clues. It is under what is now a restaurant and the owner is absolutely stunning.

Knowing your affection for the country could it be Greece somewhere?

Don't like to see challenges stall. It is on an island.

There seem.to be a few on Santorini. I don't have time to look now.
I would suggest Crete as a possibility as they had a significant wine industry once.

You have it Sir, Santorini. Cracking restaurant: https://www.pelicankipos.com/

Slightly off the tourist area but not much. They own two good hotels as well which we use. Nice little town until the cruise ships pull in mid morning then you have 6,000 people in the streets. The locals don't like it. They don't buy very much.

pfffft! I spent four years working in Greece and never went to Santorini! Yes, I can imagine how the locals feel about the cruise ship visitors. It's a similar story on the Caribbean islands.

Yes I was on one island in the Caribbean just for one night. Nice view of the sea. Following morning I was looking at a block of flats. The size of these things is quite ridiculous. Biggest takes 6,318 pax. They limit the number of ships in the bay at a time to three. But typically you have 6,000 of the bastards in town. At least in Santorini they anchor off in the bay so do not spoil the view.

Last time I saw my father was him being wheeled to the aircraft in Santorini. In fact he fell down the last step of the wine cellar and nearly brought down that whole wine rack. It could have cost me my airline pension.

I was in Lisbon, near the waterfront, sat outside in the afternoon and had a couple of beers. Next morning went and sat on the balcony to have my morning brew, and there was this 12 storey block of flats that hadn't been there the night before. MSC Musica. Hideous. And that's 'only' a 2500 pax job.

Just realised that, thank you.

This a hotel, eccentric and attracting mixed reviews. I loved it when I stayed there as it is very quiet and looks out over green fields. There is an aviation connection nearby, and it's close to a very famous town.

The decor is not to my taste, a bit vulgar.

Not Italy, and as far as I know no Italian connections.

Are the sunburst mirrors a clue?

Louis the Umteenth, the 'Sun King' liked them, so is it France?

I didn't know that, but I am not really into French decor, but not France, and again, no French connections that I know of.
This is the bathroom (en-suite). I don't think it reflects any particular style.

It is a bloody awful place you would expect to find in America. Megan Markle territory.

Ian we used to stay at an old manor house in Wales in the winter. Huge free standing bath like that and a massive open fire in the bathroom. Sit in the bath for hours up to your neck in water with a bottle of wine and two glasses on a tray which went across the width of the bath with logs blazing in the grate. Owner was a retired Royal Air Force pilot.
