It is, the scene of one of the last big battles in 1944/45, Bastogne in the Ardennes, the town was defended by the 101st US Airborne, the Screaming Eagles who stopped the German counter attack, the town square has a Sherman tank on display which is visible in the photo.
Well done Sméagol, your shot.

A whole day and not a single response! Not even a guess. Time for a clue ?
It is in a town that certain individuals on this site may have visited during their naval flying careers.

Doesn't look like the US of A to me.

I thought that I had found this last night, but then realised the pavement sloped the wrong way, there is a pub with uncanny similarities in Hobart, then I thought the sign in the pub said "McEwans" so went traipsing around Scotland, then I thought it said "Thwaites" so went around Lancashire. All to no avail.
I have already looked in Cornwall, will try again.

I've tried Helston, Falmouth, Portland and Weymouth - no luck so far - will keep looking as it does look south of England to me.

It is in a back street of the town, and there are 5 pubs (including this one) within a radius of about 100 m. My holiday cottage is immediately behind this one, I have to walk all of 15 m to go for a pint!

Jeez, how did I miss that! I went all round Penzance and didn't spot it. The Admiral Benbow, only half a mile away, used to be my favourite in days of yore.

I take it I got it right - I remembered Smeagol posting about his holiday home in another thread.

Here's another pub. The Cold War was fought from here and a railway line used to pass right in front of the door.

Well found 4mastacker. I was in the Lamp & Whistle last week (as well as several other hostelries in Penzance!)

Is this an attempt to put a West Country accent into text?

I've been looking in the north east, I can't get the cold war clue, is there a listening station around there? I have tried Newcastle and surrounding areas will extend the search later, off out on the razzle this evening.
