Never got to see BG or Satchmo but I did get to see Lionel Hampton, who played in BG’s combos. :YMAPPLAUSE:

If your age in your profile is true, we weren't at the same Lionel Hampton concert.
I saw him at Newcastle City Hall late 1956. I was in uniform!

A complicated story.
I was stationed at Lindholme and 'home' was still Redcar.
I, a shiny newly promote Cpl had applied for a weeks leave and along with a mate we had tickets for the Friday night concert.
The fact that this was the start of a week leave was incidental.
On the Thursday I was expecting 2 weeks pay and ration money, I didn't get it!
This newly promoted 19 year old heads to SHQ to give some poor Accounts Clerk what for.
At Accounts I'm told my leave has been cancelled. So I asks, Why?
Eventually a Flt Sgt turns up and tells me that I'm posted to Coningsby!
After phone calls between Signals Officers of Lindholme and Coningsby it is agreed that if I can get cleared, I can have the weekend off and I must turn up at Coningsby on the Monday.

So me & my mate turned up at Newcastle Station with all of my worldly possessions and dump them in Left Luggage.
Went to the concert and eventually I turned up at my parents with all of my kit.

Then on to Coningsby on Monday, where I also got posted from in odd circumstances. But that's another story.

I thought that I still had the concert ticket, but I can't find it. It is a bit of an oddity as Lionel's name is spelled Lional.

Ian:
I, too, saw him under unusual circumstanced.
I was home for the funeral of my much younger brother who was killed in a car crash about a month before he was due to graduate from high school.
My parents, especially my mother, were understandably devastated. After a few weeks I took it upon myself to try to get them out of their isolation in grief.
Lionel was the guest performer with The Columbus (GA) Symphony Orchestra. I had become a fan of Big Band swing, and since his music was from my parents' generation I got tickets and told them it was time to get out.
We enjoyed the concert. Hamp was in good form, especially for being almost 80.
My parents seemed to welcome this distraction and it was the beginning of their coming to grips with their new reality.
