Another Naval song, posted by me elsewhere here and probably went unheard and uncared for by those with no music in their meagre souls.. ;)))


Cyril Tawney wrote this melancholy song in 1959 before he left the Royal Navy. The title The Grey Funnel Line is an euphemism for the Navy, equating the colour of its funnels with those of company emblems found on commercial shipping lines (e.g. the Blue Funnel Line or the Black Ball Line). The song, though romantic, does show the boredom, loneliness, and longing for home that afflicts many who work on modern screw-driven vessels, be it naval or merchant marine.

No Neither BOAC, the last Farewell by the crew of the Ark Royal, used to get played down here on the local ABC 10+ years ago, never have I been able to find it.

'Sailing' however, the Rod Stewart song....well, that one was for the Father in Law as an RAN Aviator....for his funeral...and I think a song my Lad will always remember him by...

Song synonymous with a bad period in my family's history so it has a poignancy and is memorable, funnily enough for a place over 500 miles from the nearest port in my case!
