Neither did I.

In 1956 when we got American musicians in the UK after the swap agreement, I got to see/hear Louis Armstrong at Leicester and Lionel Hampton at Newcastle, and made a conscious decision not to see Bechet as I expected to get another chance, seeing as he was European based.

I was wrong

If Jazz Historian Al Rose was still alive you could argue with him. He wrote sublimely but could be bloody minded (probably why I like his stuff).

As for the rest I tend to agree with you. Personally I like Ellington's music, a great deal.
