Mike "Iron Man" Burks
Poor Mike, ex Lockheed mechanic, superb bluesman and guitar player, who dropped dead in the airport back in the US in 2012, way before his time, after having just arrived back in the states after a tour in Europe (where he was better known). He is finally, belatedly getting airplay in the US outside small venues, and the niche audience and the cognoscenti who knew him well, due to some of his music being used in a TV series...

In tribute to Mike Burks

Music to cry to

#3356 Post by Undried Plum » Thu Jun 10, 2021 12:45 pm

Music to cry to

Today I've had the dreadful news that a very good friend of many decades has finally succumbed to his horribly painful spinal cancer.

I won't name him here. I'll call him X-ray. He'd have appreciated the black humour.

Sodger X-ray, a Sergeant actually, a fellows Scotsman, was one of my Battmen when I was Catman in Dhofar in the early 1970s. He very literally saved my life during one of the very few fighting encounters we had with the Adoo when I was there. We were there on a peaceful mission to win the hearts and minds of the former adoo clans, not to kill them. He, like I, was unarmed at the time when we were confronted by two nasty unreformed Adoo. One of them was armed with a Kalashnikov, the other with a pistol, and they wanted to abduct us. He physically disarmed them both, in well under two seconds. He later became the Arab equivalent of godfather to the youngest son of one of them. That's the sort of guy he was. My son, who is now a retired Royal Marine, has his middle name of the actual first name of Sgt X.

I'm not a woofter and neither was he, but I think I can say that I loved the guy.

I'm not going to write an obituary to X-ray here, though I must contribute to one as has been asked, but I will add one anecdote here which I know he would approve of. His Regiment was pan-Commonwealth and pan-Services. He'd come from the Scots Guards, but his whole current Regiment was heavily salted with Scotsmen. I once asked him why more than half of the whole Regiment were Scots. "Cuz wurr harrd bastarts, Surr" was his reply.

I know that tonight many glasses will be raised in salute to Sodger X-ray. I've got a bottla Mac30 ready. Drowning sorrows, for the purpose of, tonight anyway. I've been told that someone has got a flagon of G-10 for exactly this occasion.

Now, back to the purpose of this ramble. Perhaps I should start a separate thread, methinks.

I'm in the mood to listen to sad and reflective music on the Bang og Olufsen in my study.

I shall have to drag the stylus needle across so many tracks of this vinyl age thread that will set so many teeth on edge, that I really ought to start a new thread on such a non-musical matter.

First, there's a man to bury.

Mebbe some appropriate music thereafter.

Then: the after stuff.

Thereafter, let's get ripped.

I, quite literally, had be carried out of Tam Bains' pub after the pissup of the B Sqn guy and had to be dumped into a taxi to send me home.

I don't expect to conduct myself any better on this occasions when I **** about the person whose's life we are 'celebrating'.

Sgt X-ray: you know who is saluting you, and why. You know who is standing up on these here feet; with a tilted glass of the barleywater, and you know why.

I salute you, Sir, in a way which nobody else in which could return your returned formal salute. Only your and my intellect could untangle that one so easily and so quickly. We did so.

I stand in salute to you, Sgt Xray, Sir. You were up there with the very the best of the best. You know that. So do I.

Neither you nor I need feel any need to explain ourselves. Nor shall we.

You won the race that neither of us wanted to win. I dunno who the winner was, really.

Now, let the music begin.

No. Not the usual Barber Adagio stuff.

Proppa cry music. That sort of thing.

Sometimes a bottle of whisky, good memories and good music are the only way to begin to work through the loss of a brother, a brother in arms, good friends, beloved family, and other beloved animals generally.

Sometimes one can't ever really work through these things and a tear or two once in while is perhaps the only way to stay sane over the course of the crazy roller coaster they call life and we just have to learn how to live without them and live the best way we can...
