Been in data comm since we formed the bits individually with a Morse key.

Beautiful little birds. Critically endangered with <200 left, I believe. Maybe you can clarify, JH?

I believe that they have a breeding programme on one of the NZ islands without predators and it is going quite well. They hope to bring birds back to the Mainland but it will have to be in a secure fenced location to keep it predator free.

They were once common but depredation by introduced mammals (incl humans) reduced the population to about 50 near the end of the last century. There is an active conservation programme now in force.

Thanks, JH. It's a tragedy to lose any species, but the kakapo is particularly endearing. Good luck to the conservationists and the birds.
