Darwin Awards 2019
Re: Darwin Awards 2019
A man who claims to be a 'train enthusiast' sticks his head out of a Gatwick Express train doing 60 mph, and is killed when his head hits a trackside object. I wonder which part of the sign isn't clear :
Sad for all concerned, and I would imagine a candidate for a Darwin Award.
It gets worse though.
Apparently it was the train company's fault.
Or maybe Robert Louis Stephenson should take the blame for building the first locomotive.
Come to think of it, who invented the wheel? Blame them.

Re: Darwin Awards 2019
AIUI, the 'window' wasn't in the public part of the train, but in a Guard's van - which wouldn't normally be accessible to the general public, so I'm not sure that there would be a warning notice, as the purpose of the 'window' was for the guard to lean out and see what might be happening on the track (ie signals).

Re: Darwin Awards 2019
Does 'Common Sense' no longer play a rôle ?
Slight drift: an acquaintance of mine who found a bee in his trousers whilst travelling from London Victoria to Eastbourne pulled down his trousers, removed them, dropped the window (I believe he was by this time in the corridor) and waved them out of the carriage window. It is not known if this tactic was successful in removing the bee, as an express train coming the other way removed his trousers from his grasp and took them back to Victoria (on the front of the locomotive) in all probability. The crowd of mothers and children awaiting the return of their loved ones on Platform Two after a week working in London were treated to an unexpected sight, this being before the days of the mobile instrument when my acquaintance could have telephonically called his wife to bring a spare pair of trousers to the station.

I guess Darwin candidates go back to do it again just to check that they got it wrong the first time.

Just wondering how one manages to cut off one's own heads with a chainsaw. I guess it requires the perfect angle from which to strike and rely o the momentum to keep it moving, or fix the chainsaw in position and run into it.

A Cambridge University student fell to her death in Madagascar after opening the door of a small plane in mid-air, police have said.
Re: Darwin Awards 2019
Apparently it was suicide, so rather sad, and doesn't qualify.

Allegedly possible side-effects of anti-malaria medication?
Cambridge student who died in Madagascar 'opened plane door' https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-b ... s-49192865
Some in this forum can no doubt testify to the wierd experiences having had to take this poison as part of the job flying into & out of or based in cesspits various?

The Malaria Risk zone of Southern Africa
The whole of Madagascar should also be included.
The side effects of anti malaria drugs affect people differently, most people I know don't bother. But I've never heard of anyone having any LSD type symptoms.
I live about 10Km from Port Shepstone, outside of all normally affected area's. Maybe the Ex A's have more experience?

Re: Darwin Awards 2019
I would suggest that this article is using old data. We have virtually eliminated malaria in Botswana. https://reliefweb.int/report/botswana/b ... limination
As far as anti malaria prophylaxis are concerned you can't take them for more than 3 months without the risk of damage to the liver. Malaria carrying mossies tend to be in areas of population and stagnant water. We are in the middle of nowhere and the water is usually moving. When we lived just outside town you would get eaten alive outside in the evenings. Here there are very few of the little buggers and probably not malaria carrying. At the end of the day the trick is not to get bitten. Even mossie repellent is not good for you long term.
The possible hallucinogenic drug is Mefloquine. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4097020/

Re: Darwin Awards 2019
There was a local case where I guy was bitten by a mossie, and infected by malaria, in Pretoria, just after a holiday season.
It was assumed that the mossie had been brought to Pretoria in a minibus taxi, probably from Mozambique.

Re: Darwin Awards 2019
Skegness is malaria free, maybe more people should go on holiday there
Edit- Perhaps more people are going to Skegness
Edit- Perhaps more people are going to Skegness
Two package holiday firms have collapsed, affecting more than 50,000 travellers.
Malvern Group, which incorporates Manchester-based Late Rooms and York-based Superbreak Mini Holidays, known as Super Break, has ceased trading.
The group said Super Break hotel-only holidays would be cancelled and people currently on holiday might have to pay again.
It said it "anticipated" bookings through Late Rooms would be secure.
When all else fails, read the instructions.
