Sausage Surprise
Is it taken orally, or is there a real surprise?

BTW, tonight is hot-smoked salmon with baby spuds and dwarf beans. We may have granddottir here, so I have fish fingers on standby.

Today, with the lifting of some travel restrictions in Scotland, we're heading off to the Gosford estate in East Lothian. There's a farm shop there with a fantastic butcher, so the Mastercard will take a hit. I'll report back on WfTM once I've bought it.

Gosford turned up trumps as usual. 1 large brisket joint for pot roast tonight, lots of good bacon, lorne sausage and a couple of scotch pies.

Some are excellent, some should be condemned. We bought a pack at a market a few years ago and the "filling" was 5mm of some grey mush. One bite; bucket. The Gosford pies are full of meat (mutton) and spices and are delicious. There's a butcher over to the west side of Edinburgh which sells minced beef and gravy pies and they are superb. Aldi sells "The Famous Kilmarnock Pie" (best football ground pie in Scotland year after year) and it's a basic pie case full of steak and gravy with a flaky pastry top.

My brother and I used to take our Dad to junior cup games where he played in the early '50s. Good pies and bovril. Brother managed 7 of the pies somehow, then threw them all up again. Can't take him anywhere.

Thanks, BOAC, although a bra strap pie might be more to my taste!

Edit: My Dad had an interesting technique when it came to eating a pie. He would very carefully cut around and remove the lid, add brown sauce to the filling, replace the lid and consume.

MrsP has grumbled that I use leftover beef to make stovies (posts passim ad nauseam) so a ruby will be fettled tomorrow. We'll have leftover beef with pickles and stuff tonight AFTER her yoga class (pickles before yoga being conducive to farty bouts) and what's left will go into the curry tomorrow. I have fresh turmeric in the fridge, so that'll be involved.

I LOVE tripe, particularly sheep's; not a huge fan of ox tripe. Mum still makes it from time to time and freezes it in tubs. If I beg enough, she'll part with a tub for me. Next time we're in France, I'll try the andouille or andouillette. Last time I had tripe was in Florence in a nice wee restaurant at the back of the Ufizzi.

Yes, andouille does have a certain "je ne sais quoi" vaguely reminiscent of their origin. Sometimes they can be f-in' dreadful like the ones that SWMBO and I had for lunch in Monet's garden at Giverney which cause gastric ructions in the wee sma' hours.
