Success with the dripping. The fish were enormous, so MtMM is a happy boy.
Tonight is cumberland sausage on a bed of spiced puy lentils.

It's supposed to be chicken chow mien tonight, but the War Department left the ginger in the supermarket trolley. She's been instructed to find some when she goes for a walk this afternoon.

Re: Wot's for Tea, Ma?
Is the asparagus native to your area?
Asparagus is native to coastal regions of Europe and Asia, and was brought to North America by European settlers in the 1700's

It is plentiful and cheap here in SA.
Dunno where it grows, we buy it in a shop.

Asparagus here probably coming from California Central or Imperial Valleys. Also, lower Colorado Valley near Yuma.
All of those areas are a main source of winter veggie crops.
We also get a lot of fruits and veggies from Mexico, esp. avocados, berries, tomatoes, etc.

The area of land in front of me, maybe 15 or 20,000 sqm or more is alive with wild asparagus, two or three natives come and pick it every week in season.
We can't get over how fast it grows.

Re: Wot's for Tea, Ma?
We have some wild asparagus planted in the garden which regularly runs amok and our gardener has to go in with gloves to cull it. It's very nice though.
Just made a butterbean casserole which is now slowly cooking in the solar oven.

Gorra nice piece of gammon. I'll boil it (stock for lentil soup), and finish it with a honey & mustard glaze in the oven. Baby spuds and savoy cabbage to go with it.
The sons of Morris are illegitimate. Used to get 16 rashers of bacon in a pack, so that gave us 4 per bacon roll, half this week, half in the freezer for next week. You now only get 14 rashers per pack. Buggrem.

That is a widespread problem. Bacon I mean. The other is slicing it Soooo fine and making a 250 gm pack 200 with the same number of rashers.

And another thing. 23 Chocolate digestive biscuits in a pack. Used to be 24 which was a useful multiple of 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, usefully getting you through a pack with equal measures of your choice. 23 is prime. Bastids.

Re: Wot's for Tea, Ma?
We have a Sefrican problem, the local bacon tends to be sliced too thick.
When cooked, it cooks hard not crispy.
Where we lived in Joburg we had a German butcher who would slice as requested, but here on the coast only the pre-packed stuff in the Supermarkets.
The best we have found is Pick 'n Pay's streaky.
Tonight we are partaking of Cuisine Belgique, moules et frites.

I had several acres on The Wash, did you know it was a pioneer plant? On the Gulf coast it is grown commercially
Re: Wot's for Tea, Ma?
PN;
Never heard of it.
Looked it up; it does indeed look like asparagus.
Doubt that I will come across it anytime soon as I am a thousand or so miles from the Gulf Coast.

Re: Wot's for Tea, Ma?
Local fishmonger gets samphire. I just rinse it, wilt it in a bit of butter, add a squeeze of lemon juice and serve it with bass or bream. Very tasty.
